Workers at an important North American port have begun a major strike, and logistics will be delayed indefinitely!

Montreal port workers to start strike on April 26

Recently, many foreign media have reported that workers at the Port of Montreal, Canada , have issued a notice of an indefinite strike , which will paralyze the port. Not only will it have a severe impact on the economy, it will also lead to a decline in cargo volume at this key port.

The Maritime Employers Association has previously received a strike notice from the union representing dock workers . Starting at 7 a.m. on April 26 , 1,150 port workers affiliated with the Canadian Union of Public Employees will begin an indefinite strike.

The main reason for the workers' strike is the labor dispute. It is understood that workers at the Port of Montreal have not had an employment contract since December 2018 , and they started their first strike last summer .

Judging from the situation after the port workers went on strike last year, all container cargo loading and unloading operations in and out of the Port of Montreal will be suspended, and cargo backlogs are inevitable.

The Port of Montreal handles more than C$275 million worth of goods every day. Any port disruption will inevitably cause logistics delays, increased costs and other uncertainties, and therefore the entire supply chain will be affected.

Martin Imbleau , president and CEO of the Montreal Port Authority , said that as infrastructure in the supply chain, an indefinite strike by workers at the Port of Montreal will hinder the port's operations from playing a key role in economic recovery .

During this period, North American logistics has been hit hard, and the strike of Montreal port workers will undoubtedly make the situation "worse."

Maersk adjusts 10 trans-Pacific routes, involving multiple Chinese ports

In addition to the strike by port workers in Montreal, Canada, Maersk also said that its trans-Pacific routes were severely delayed in 2021.

On Thursday, Maersk announced that there were significant delays on the Asia-North America route in 2021, mainly due to continued congestion at ports in the two coastal regions, coupled with the impact of the Suez Canal incident and bad weather, which exacerbated recent congestion and delays.

Maersk said that the above factors have caused the route service to take 2-3 weeks longer than usual, and the interval between voyages departing from Asia has exceeded 7 days.

In the announcement, Maersk released adjusted voyages, including those on 10 trans-Pacific routes, involving ports such as Qingdao, Ningbo, Yantian, Nansha, Xiamen, and Hong Kong. The voyage adjustment will be implemented from May.

Recently, there have been a lot of reports of logistics delays caused by congestion at North American ports and long waiting times for container ships. Maersk has made adjustments in the face of insufficient capacity and inability to meet all demands, hoping to reduce the impact on the logistics market.
