On April 15, Elon Musk, a super influencer and a strong supporter of Dogecoin, tweeted: "Dogs barking at the moon" and attached a painting by Spanish artist Joan Miro. Musk has previously posted a series of tweets about Dogecoin, and each time he did so, the value of Dogecoin began to soar, and this time was no exception.
Musk's tweets
The tweet sent people rushing to invest in Dogecoin, causing the Robinhood app to crash due to too many registered users. Less than 24 hours after the tweet was posted, Dogecoin’s market value nearly tripled.
As the value of Dogecoin soared, people began to petition Amazon to accept Dogecoin as a payment method, and a petition called Doge4Amazon returned to people's attention.
Doge4Amazon was first launched on Change.org by a user named "Mark E" in September 2018. At the time, the petition only set a total goal of 25,000 signatures.
The petition reads: “It’s time for Amazon to be one of the first big companies to see the power of Dogecoin, and with the huge momentum Dogecoin is creating right now, it’s time for Amazon to accept Dogecoin as a form of payment!”
As of April 19, the petition has more than 130,000 signatures, with a total goal of 150,000. The topic "Amazon considering accepting Dogecoin payments" also became a hot search on Weibo.
According to the initiator "Mark E", Change.org staff have already contacted Amazon.
According to foreign media reports, brother-in-law (Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon) is planning to support Dogecoin, the highly-watched new internet celebrity, by investing billions of dollars.
The British Express quoted financial experts as saying that in the long run, Bezos' joining will bring Dogecoin to new heights. The expert added that Bezos may become the second protagonist in promoting Dogecoin.
There are also reports that Amazon is developing a secret plan to launch its own cryptocurrency to compete with other currencies. Previously, Amazon posted a job advertisement online saying that the company is recruiting for the position of "Digital and Emerging Payments (DEP)".
The job description shows that Amazon will "convert cash into digital currency" and "we are building a technology team to create new payment products for customers in emerging markets." The report said this implies that Amazon will support transactions on the platform in some form of virtual currency.
However, these statements have not been officially confirmed by Amazon. We will have to wait and see whether Bezos plans to invest in Dogecoin and launch his own cryptocurrency. Amazon Platform |
