Indonesia's fish demand surges during Ramadan fasting

As we all know, Muslims have to eat during the annual Ramadan, which lasts about 30 days. So how do Muslims maintain their body's nutritional needs during this period?

Indonesia's Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) encourages locals to eat as much fish as possible during the Ramadan fasting period.

"Fish is rich in protein and we do not need to worry about the source as the supply is sufficient to meet the demand during Eid al-Fitr 2021," said Director General Artati Widiarti at a press conference on Tuesday.

Artati Widiarti ensures that the supply of fish products in each region is safe and fully meets the needs of the community.

Artati Widiarti pointed out that as of March 31, 2021, the ministry also sent letters to the heads of marine and fishery services across Indonesia, hoping to open an online and offline market for the supply of fish products during Ramadan.

Artati Widiarti confirmed that fish products supply markets can apply through #PasarlautIndonesia and cooperate with e-commerce platforms. At the same time, offline low-cost fish products can be held in traditional markets, areas with strong population epidemics and safety measures.

Artati Widiarti explained: “We remain optimistic that local governments will play an active role in organizing the participation of local SMEs.

According to a study by food practitioners from the Faculty of Fisheries and Maritime Affairs at Airlangga University in Indonesia , omega-3 fatty acids found in tuna, mackerel, sardines, eels, milkfish and catfish can provide sufficient energy for the human body.

Meanwhile, Innes Rahmania, Director of Logistics at the General Directorate of PDSPKP, explained that based on the analysis of 2020 data and the forecast for 2021, the demand for fish during April-May 2021 will reach 2.5225 million tons, and the supply of fish is expected to reach 2.696 million tons.

“Demand for fish products is expected to increase in the first week of Ramadan and stabilize in the second week before Eid al-Fitr,” he said . “Seven days after Eid al-Fitr, overall demand will increase again as demand for fish products increases in hotels, restaurants, catering and so on.”
