60% of consumers are willing to pay for sustainability! Product packaging may become the focus

During the past pandemic, e-commerce sales in various countries have increased significantly. According to Adobe data, in 2020, online consumption in the United States alone reached 813 billion US dollars, an increase of 42% over 2019. Therefore, Adobe predicts that US e-commerce will exceed 1 trillion US dollars in 2022 .

With the rapid development of e-commerce, keywords such as sustainable development and carbon emissions have become the focus of attention of all parties. In this context, environmental protection has become a hurdle that must be overcome in the development of e-commerce, so how to deal with environmental protection issues has become something that major e-commerce platforms and merchants need to pay attention to.

Under the call for sustainable development of e-commerce, the first to respond were a series of logistics services closely related to e-commerce, such as UPS, FedEx, Amazon and the United States Postal Service . The measures they took were to invest in electric vehicles and natural gas-powered vehicles . Among them, Amazon said in early February this year that it had ordered more than 700 compressed natural gas-powered trucks (CNG) to reduce carbon emissions and strive to reduce air pollution caused by its US delivery fleet.

In addition to carbon emissions during logistics and transportation, another area of concern is the packaging of goods. We can also look at how foreign companies deal with packaging issues:

Shoe maker Allbirds sends its wares in a shoebox that doubles as a shipping box. Cleancult offers customers reusable glass soap dispensers and spray bottles. HelloFresh adds cardboard to reduce the plastic used in each meal box

In early news, data showed that Amazon's daily test "reduced packaging by tens of thousands of boxes." The company plans to make 50% of all shipments zero-carbon net emissions by 2030. I believe that packaging issues will also become a focus of attention for e-commerce to achieve sustainable development.

As a legally mandatory law, the new German packaging law clearly stipulates that transport packaging is also packaging, so online retailers must also register packaging and pay licensing fees. In addition, the bill will also encourage reusable packaging , which has a great impact on cross-border sellers.

In fact, sustainability is not only an issue, but also a selling point in e-commerce. In recent years, as people's environmental awareness has increased, the concept of sustainability has increasingly influenced consumers' choices. A study by Forbes shows that 60% of consumers buy products and services from companies that are socially or environmentally responsible.

The latest survey results from Trivium Packaging , a global leader in metal packaging, show that nearly three-quarters of consumers are willing to pay more for sustainable packaging. The survey also found that most consumers consider themselves "environmentally conscious", and more than two-thirds of consumers believe that environmentally friendly and recyclable packaging is important.

As the world's second largest packaging country, China has always had the problem of excessive packaging of goods . However, compared with the rapid response of foreign companies, the response of domestic companies and merchants is still much slower. Therefore, cross-border sellers need to do their homework on this kind of problem.
