75% of households in North America plan to renovate their homes, and home improvement enters its peak season!

75% of households in North America plan to renovate their homes, and home improvement enters its peak season!

The boom in home spending continues as shoppers continue to spend money to spruce up their homes as spring arrives and the home improvement and renovation season arrives .

More than three-quarters of households in the U.S. and Canada plan to undertake at least one home improvement project this spring, according to a new Spring Black Friday survey from shopping and savings app Flipp . Nearly 80% of respondents plan to spend between $100 and $5,000 on indoor projects, while more than 60% plan to spend $500 on outdoor renovations.

Nafisa Kassam, Chief Trading Officer at Flipp, said: “Spring Black Friday is a shopping event that has gradually become a key sales season for home and garden retailers, but is still relatively unknown to consumers. From indoor DIY projects to outdoor patio transformations, our focus is to increase people’s awareness of this shopping event and encourage consumers to start their home DIY improvement projects now !

Survey data shows that 90% of shoppers have flexible budgets to ensure they complete their renovation projects, and most projects take at least two weeks to complete. In addition, many consumers plan to renovate more than one room, among which the most common is shared space at home , and nearly 40% plan to renovate the living room/family room .

Regarding indoor renovation projects, the top three product purchase categories are: paint, decoration, and furniture ; regarding outdoor project renovation, plants and flowers, gardening supplies, and gardening tools are the top three product purchase categories.

In addition, 88% of shoppers will research the products they need, indicating that the home decor they purchase is not an impulse buy . The top three sources of home decor inspiration include: online manuals, online stores, and social media.

In both the United States and Canada, more than 40% of residents believe that product quality is the most important factor in their purchasing decisions, with price coming in a close second . If the pandemic-induced lockdown continues and in-store shopping is not possible, most consumers will switch to online shopping and will not give up on making purchases .

It is understood that spring Black Friday usually runs from mid-March to mid-June, when retailers offer sales and deals to stimulate spring and summer sales. However, consumer awareness of the promotion is currently at an all-time low, with only 20% of U.S. shoppers knowing about it, and the number in Canada is even lower, at only 9%.

Spring is the best season for home improvement , as the temperature is suitable . According to the survey data, most home improvement projects in the United States will start between March and May, while Canadian residents are more likely to start between April and June. For home improvement retailers, this stage is a favorable time to sell home improvement products.
