With 30.5 million users, Viu leads Southeast Asia’s video streaming market

PCCW's pan-regional OTT video streaming service Viu achieved strong results in the fourth quarter of 2020, according to a report by AMPD Research, a subsidiary of Media Partners Asia (MPA).

According to the AMPD research report, Viu ranks first among Southeast Asian video platforms in terms of monthly active users, including Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand.

Among the major streaming platforms in Southeast Asia, Viu ranks second in terms of paying users and streaming minutes.

In Indonesia and Singapore, Viu ranked second in terms of monthly active users, paying users and streaming minutes.

In the Philippines, Viu ranked first in terms of monthly active users and second in terms of paying users and streaming minutes.

Viu Chief Commercial Officer for Asia Helen Sou said the opportunities in the fast-growing online video streaming market are huge and are expected to continue to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 26% over the next three years .

Viu 's content strategy for the Asian market , its commitment to partnerships, and its monetization model (including advertising and subscription tiers) have been gaining traction among subscribers and advertisers in Southeast Asia, as evidenced in the AMPD research report .

Anthony Dobson, MPA vice president and AMPD managing director, added: “Excluding YouTube, the total number of online video users in Southeast Asia has reached 195 million, with Viu leading the pack across all platforms with a total of 30.5 million users in these markets.

Viu's efforts to attract subscribers through premium content and a growing number of local acquisitions and original productions have contributed to the overall growth of SVoD in Southeast Asia. Previously, between January 20 and April 11, 2020 , the average viewing time of users across major streaming platforms in the Southeast Asian market increased by 150% .

For major streaming platforms, it takes some time to cultivate user habits. Based on this, Viu has created an operating model similar to that of video websites in mainland China, where users can watch videos for free, but must watch interstitial ads at the same time, or apply for membership to avoid ads.
