E-commerce transaction volume in a single month is nearly 19 billion yuan
Data shows that Russia's e-commerce transaction volume in January this year increased by nearly 49% compared with the same period in 2020, reaching 211.816 billion rubles (about 18.8 billion yuan). In January last year, this figure was 142.434 billion rubles (about 12.6 billion yuan).
The Russian Association of E-Commerce Enterprises stated that representatives of small and medium-sized enterprises were the most active in e-commerce transactions in January this year. More than 100,000 entrepreneurs "sold goods and started businesses" through e-commerce platforms, while the rest used their own channels and resources for sales.
Artem Sokolov, president of the association, said that as the number of sellers increased, Russians' online shopping spending also increased significantly. "In this year's Cyber Monday promotion in Russia, Russian consumers spent 27.2 billion rubles (about 2.4 billion yuan), almost five times the same period a year ago." He also believes that now Russians are more willing to spend money in this area in order to make their home life more comfortable.
Consumer preferences in January : Demand for furniture and household goods increased nearly 3.5 times year-on-year
Overall , compared with January last year, furniture and household goods saw the fastest growth, with demand increasing by 3.46 times year- on-year, followed by creative goods (up 2.58 times) and children's products (up 2.4 times). Demand for books, clothing and footwear, and gardening equipment showed negative values , down 21%, 12%, and 7%, respectively.
Wildberries data shows that compared with the same period last year, the platform's sports product sales in January this year increased by 3.31 times, of which sportswear increased by nearly 5 times . The sales of baby food and beauty perfume increased by 4 times and 2.42 times respectively. In addition, due to the increase in the number of remote workers, the sales of laptops and other computer products increased by 2.64 times.
Dmitry Rusakov , head of Ozon communications , said one of the factors driving sales on the platform in January was the New Year , during which many consumers bought gifts on the platform that arrived quickly to exchange in the first week of January. Other driving factors were Cyber Monday and a cold snap in central Russia, which caused consumers to turn to online shopping for products and daily necessities.
