As of Wednesday, eBay announced that it has made managed payments available to sellers in three more countries, part of an ambitious goal to require all sellers to register for managed payments by the end of the year.
On March 3, eBay announced the official launch of managed payment services in France, Italy and Spain. By managing the end-to-end payment process on its platform, it provides buyers with more flexible payment methods and options and provides sellers with easier business management.
In a message on Wednesday, eBay advised sellers to register before the deadline after receiving the notice to avoid disruption to their business. eBay pointed out: "The information shared during the registration process enables us to allow you to properly set up and manage payments and comply with applicable laws, which helps make eBay a trustworthy marketplace." It is reported that this is because some sellers are reluctant to provide sensitive information required by eBay, such as social security numbers.
eBay said that currently more than 1 million sellers around the world have registered for managed payments, and 38% of eBay's transactions on the global platform are processed through managed payments. But in fact, the number of sellers on the eBay platform is around 19 million. Although more than 1 million sellers have registered for managed payments, there are still 18 million sellers on eBay who still use the original payment method for payment.
After the eBay managed payment service was initially launched in the United States for trial at the end of 2018, it was expanded to countries such as Germany, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, and now to France, Italy, and Spain. eBay has previously announced that it will launch a managed payment service in Greater China, and will continue to promote this service globally in 2021, and will complete the full popularization and promotion of managed payments in 2022.
More than two years have passed since the launch of managed payments in 2018, and the various implementations and details of eBay managed payments are still a mystery to many Chinese eBay sellers. In fact, even abroad, many sellers who have registered for managed payments are not used to it. Some survey agencies have even found that since managed payments began to be promoted among eBay UK individual sellers, more individual sellers have chosen to leave eBay and sell on other platforms.
Research from the research agency believes that individual sellers chose to leave in large part because of the unbundling of eBay and PayPal. Although according to eBay officials, the fees for sellers to withdraw cash to bank accounts are much lower than withdrawing cash through PayPal, for individual sellers, the benefits of reduced fees do not seem to be as important as PayPal's "small treasury" that is independent of bank accounts and can be freely used.
