Russian e-commerce is gaining momentum! DPD Group's e-commerce parcel transportation volume increased by 89% year-on-year last year

Published data shows that DPD transported more than 50 million parcels weighing 500 million kilograms in 2020. The number of e-commerce parcels increased by 89% compared with 2019, and revenue increased by 68% year-on-year.

Nikolai Voinov, CEO of DPD Russia , said that although 2020 was a challenging year for the logistics industry, DPD's presence in Russia's B2B e-commerce sector has not diminished, and its growth in e-commerce delivery is significantly higher than the industry's overall level.

A study by Data Insight shows that the number of e-commerce parcels delivered by the Russian logistics industry in 2020 increased by 35% compared to 2019, while DPD increased by 89%. Based on this research data, Nikola estimates that DPD accounts for about a quarter of the Russian logistics market.

According to DPD data, the five product categories with the largest growth in e-commerce parcel volume are: jewelry (up 5 times), sports, travel and leisure products (up 3 times), furniture and accessories (up 2.8 times), tools (up 2 times) and household goods (up 1.4 times). At the same time, the parcel volume of musical instruments, children's products, computers and laptops, clothing and footwear, cosmetics and perfumes has also increased significantly.

DPD 's performance is mainly due to the explosive growth of Russia's e-commerce business. In addition, DPD's order delivery capabilities have also been significantly improved due to the implementation of DPD's new service standards, automation and artificial intelligence-based solutions in 2020. It is reported that DPD's two centers in Moscow are basically operating at full capacity, with each center processing up to 100,000 parcels per day, and nearly 200,000 during peak periods.

In addition, DPD's international business also saw strong growth, with its cross-border shipping volume in 2020 increasing by 85% compared to 2019. This was due to an increase in DPD's customer orders and the launch of new products. Last year, DPD introduced international brands such as Victoria's Secret, American Eagle, Tarte, Decos and MVMT to the Russian market.

DPD is optimistic about the situation in 2021 and plans to open a new automated logistics center in southern Moscow, which is expected to handle 350,000 parcels per day.
