Peru's imports of school supplies fell 52% in 2020, but tablets grew 157%

According to a report by the Institute of Foreign Trade and Development of the Lima Chamber of Commerce ( Idexcam ) , the epidemic has promoted the development of online education in Peru, and the teaching method has changed from face-to-face teaching to remote teaching. As a result, the import volume of traditional hot-selling school supplies such as notebooks and writing pens has been halved, down 52%, while the import volume of electronic learning tools such as laptops and tablets has increased significantly, up 57% and 157% respectively.

Import volume of traditional school supplies was halved, with notebook demand seeing the biggest drop

After the outbreak, education departments at all levels in Peru responded to the government's social isolation policy, and school teaching activities were transferred to online, which in turn affected the sales of traditional school supplies and the import volume dropped significantly. In 2020, the total value of Peru's imports of traditional school supplies was US$13.1 million. According to Idexcam statistics, the school supplies most affected by the epidemic were pens and notebooks.

According to the Idexcam report, Peru imported 69.6 million ballpoint pens last year with a total purchase amount of US$5 million, a year-on-year decrease of 41.1% from 2019. The main sources of imports were China, Japan and India.

At the same time, Peru imported 123.8 million pencils in 2020 , with an import value of US$7.4 million, a year-on-year decrease of 39%. The main sources of imports were China, Brazil and Canada.

In addition, Peru imported 632,070 notebooks in 2020 , with an import value of US$373,200, a year-on-year decrease of 60.9%. China, Canada and Italy were its top three sources of imports.

It can be seen that when the import volume of Peruvian school supplies was halved, Chinese sellers were the first to be hit and suffered the most serious losses.

The import volume of electronic products increased significantly, with tablet computers increasing by 157%

In sharp contrast to the sharp decline in consumption of traditional school supplies in Peru is the sharp increase in demand for all types of computers in Peru.

Idexcam statistics show that compared to desktop computers, Peruvian consumers prefer portable laptops and tablets. In 2020, the sales volume of laptops in Peru increased by 57%, and the import value increased by 47%; the import volume of tablets increased by 157%, and the import value increased by 269%.

According to CCL Label Company, the average monthly unit price of laptops imported into Peru is US$520, and the average monthly unit price of tablets is US$88.

The increase in laptops and tablets imported from Peru has also provided Chinese sellers with a new product selection trend. The market demand for related 3C products such as mouse pads, protective covers, stickers, computer bags and chargers is also expected to increase accordingly. Sellers can pay more attention to sales in this area.

Currently, Peru is experiencing a rebound in the domestic epidemic, and a 14-day "lockdown" order was announced on January 26, which is tentatively scheduled to be lifted on February 14.

Peruvian Cabinet Minister Violeta Bermúdez recently called on all sectors of society, both private and state-owned enterprises, to work remotely during the "lockdown". As a result, online sales of office supplies including computers, desks and chairs may see another round of growth.

Peru is a country in South America with a population of approximately 32 million. The average age is 28.4 years old, and the Internet penetration rate is over 56%. The e-commerce platforms commonly used by locals include Meikeduo , Linio, Amazon and eBay .

According to statistics from Latin American e-commerce leader Meikeduo, the number of Meikeduo users in Peru increased by 17 million in 2020, among which the number of users aged 18-34 grew the fastest. Other data show that as of the third quarter of 2020, the number of online buyers in Peru increased by 200%.
