VK.com (formerly VKontakte.ru, referred to as VK) is a well-known Russian online social networking service website. It is the most visited social website in Russia. Its main users are distributed in Russian-speaking areas such as Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Moldova.

About VK

VK was first founded by Pavel Durov after he graduated from St. Petersburg State University in September 2006. In July 2007, its registered users reached one million, and in April 2008, it reached 10 million. In December 2008, VK surpassed another Russian social networking site, Odnoklassniki, to become the most popular social networking site in Russia.

VKontakte comes from the Russian word “В Контакте”, which means “stay in touch”.

VK currently provides more than 80 language versions, with a total of more than 250 million verified users and an average of more than 100 million monthly active users, basically covering the entire Eastern European Internet users. It is an important traffic entrance for cross-border e-commerce and mobile products to enter Russia. VK has the most loyal audience in the CIS countries, with an average daily visit volume of more than 50 million. In terms of mobile layout, data released by VK shows that currently, 70% of smartphones in Russia have installed the VK mobile app, with more than 50 million users, of which 10 million are pure mobile users. The cooperation with YeahMobi marks VK's further efforts in the mobile field.

Popularity

Russia has the largest number of visits;

Belarus is second in visits;

Kazakhstan is the third most visited country;

The fourth most visited country is Estonia, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova and Ukraine (however, in May 2017, the Ukrainian government banned the use of VK in Ukraine);

Latvia ranks 5th in terms of visits.

VK in China

- In January 2016, it was reported that China had banned the social networking site. According to Russian media monitoring agencies, the network is estimated to have about 300,000 Chinese users.

-On February 14, 2018, VK said: "The Chinese government has lifted the ban on the use of VK. The social networking site is now fully accessible in China, including computers, mobile clients and mobile applications."

2. If you already have an account, log in directly. If you don’t have one, register:

Please fill in your phone number truthfully. If you don't receive it within one minute, you can let the robot call you:

3. Then enter the received code and set the password to successfully register.

How to attract fans on VK for cross-border sellers

1. Add a VK plug-in on an independent website: Whether it is Shopify or WordPress, it is very important to add a VK sharing button on the seller's independent website to attract customers to the seller's website and encourage them to share and forward through the VK button. The more forwarding, the higher the promotion and the more traffic.

2. Use VK bidding ads: Using targeted ads is one of the most effective ways to promote the seller’s VK group, fan page or website.

3. Exchange free posts with other fans: When your fan page or group reaches a certain number of fans, you can try to exchange posts with other fans in your niche (not necessarily your competitors). The main thing is to correctly choose the page to exchange posts. Sellers should look for fan pages at the same level of followers and activity. This cooperation should be beneficial to both parties.

4. Invite friends to follow your fan page: This method is mainly used by newbies on VK. Sellers can create a personal account and send friend requests to people in the target group (for example, followers of a competitor's fan page). When they accept the request, sellers can invite them to visit their own fan page.

5. Create additional non-commercial fan pages (same for Facebook): This means creating and promoting other fan pages that are not directly related to the seller’s business, but are focused on its theme.

6. Buying fans or groups: If you don't have time to promote a fan page from scratch, then buying a fan page makes sense in some cases. It needs to match the seller's theme or branch and be active (with new posts, comments, likes, etc.). Sellers can save time by looking for VK fan page or group sellers here. But high returns come with high risks.

7. Purchase posts on other product pages and groups: Many fanpages promote posts on their newsfeed.

8. Buying posts on user profiles: There are specific platforms where you can find bloggers or regular users who place the seller’s promotional posts on their profiles.

9. Get a relatively high ranking in VK search results page: Write a few more articles about the seller's own products and insert multiple keywords. Generally speaking, this method is one of the effective ways to put the seller's fan page in the top few in VK's internal search results.

10. Viral marketing: Publish more relevant articles and create content that can be spread.

11. Organize events: Just like on Facebook, the main practice is to randomly give followers gifts or discount coupons (such as products) in exchange for certain behaviors (like the seller’s own fan page, share posts, etc.).

12. Do some SEO to get high rankings in Yandex and Google: After search engines started indexing social media, some indexed pages started to appear in Yandex and Google search results. Doing relevant SEO or buying some external links to VK can get higher rankings on search engines, thereby gaining huge traffic and fans.

Development History

-In 2006, when Vk was first established, it received financial support from the Russian venture capital fund Digital Sky Technologies, which is also an investor in Facebook.

-In February 2007, the site reached over 100,000 active users and was established as the second largest in Russia's emerging social networking market.

-In April 2008, the user base reached 10 million.

-In 2009, VK spent a lot of money to acquire the vk.vom domain name, and in October launched a multilingual version, which included as many as 12 languages including simplified Chinese and Japanese.

-As of December 2012, VK has at least 1.95 million accounts and an average of 430,000 daily users.

-In November 2014, VK reached a cooperation with YeahMobi, a Chinese mobile Internet advertising service provider, with the aim of jointly promoting the distribution of Chinese games in the Russian-speaking region.

-In 2016, hacker groups were selling some of VK's account data on the black market - involving 100 million accounts and a capacity of about 17GB.

-In September 2016, VK launched a new feature - making money by uploading videos.

-As of March 2018, VK has at least 477 million accounts.

- As of March 2018, in addition to Russia, VK is ranked as the most popular social networking site in Belarus, Ukraine, and Kazakhstan.
