About TOTO Corporation

TOTO was founded by Japanese Kazuchika Okura in 1917. It was originally called Toyo Toki Co., Ltd. and later changed its name to TOTO (Toto Machinery Co., Ltd.). TOTO challenges the traditional hygiene concepts that have been accepted by the public.

In the nearly 100 years of development, TOTO has become well-known in the world for its high-end technology, excellent performance, and corporate philosophy of commitment to environmental protection.

The development history of TOTO Co., Ltd.

  • In 1917, TOTO was founded as Toyo Toki Co., Ltd., and later changed its name to TOTO (Toto Machinery Co., Ltd.). In 1912, a laboratory dedicated to the research and development of sanitary ceramics was established (at that time, sanitary ceramic products were already very common in Europe and the United States, while wooden toilets were still popular in Japan, which was a huge contrast to Japan's advanced sanitary culture today). With the widespread sales of these sanitary ceramic products, TOTO challenged the traditional hygiene concepts that had been accepted by the public, and TOTO continues to work on this today [1].

  • In 1923, the Great Kanto Earthquake brought devastating damage to Tokyo. During the post-disaster reconstruction, the large-scale construction of drainage systems led to a sharp increase in the demand for sanitary ware.

  • In 1946, after World War II, TOTO began to manufacture metal accessories, faucets and ceramics. Since then, the development of TOTO's two core businesses - firing and casting of sanitary ceramics, has driven innovation in the field of precision machining technology and has flourished.

  • In 1964, after the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, Japan created an economic miracle. With the construction boom generated by the Olympic economy, TOTO once again led the trend of bathroom technology development. Vigorously develop manufacturing technology that can meet mass production while saving construction time and energy consumption. According to Olympic standards, TOTO provides prefabricated bathroom services for 1,044 rooms of the New Otani Hotel in Tokyo, showing the perfect combination of technology and design.

  • In 1977, the first overseas TOTO joint venture, PT Surya TOTO Indonesia, was established.

  • In 1980, TOTO launched the WASHLET product, bringing a new clean and comfortable bathroom experience to customers.

  • In 1981, after developing the WASHLET product, TOTO began to apply its advanced technology to other product areas by introducing high-end standard kitchen supplies.

  • In 1990, TOTO began trading in the United States and expanded to Indonesia, South Korea, North Korea, Thailand, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. In 1994, TOTO expanded its business to mainland China.

  • In 1993, the NEOREST series of toilets were launched, which fully embodied the concept of cleaning technology and combined with WASHLET and TOTO's full range of innovative products to create a bathroom space with aesthetic standards and performance quality.

  • In 1998, TOTO launched Hydrate, a patented photocatalyst technology. The material has the function of self-cleaning and removing pollutants from the air. It is easy to clean, can eliminate odors and prevent bacteria growth, so it is a product suitable for indoor and outdoor use.

  • In 2006, the TOTO Universal Design Research Center was established with the aim of creating new products through dialogue and feedback from customers.

  • In 2009, TOTO officially landed in Europe with the help of the Frankfurt International Bathroom Exhibition from March 10th to 14th.

  • In 2010, TOTO advocated global green, environmentally friendly and low-carbon living.
