With 15 million monthly active users, Temu continues to soar in this country!

With the entry of Chinese platforms such as Temu, competition in Mexico's e-commerce market has become increasingly fierce. The Bank of Mexico believes that the influence of well-known Chinese e-commerce platforms among Mexican users even exceeds that of local large retailer Liverpool .

In terms of app channels, according to data from Similar Web , Temu had 15 million monthly active users in April. In comparison, other large retailers in Mexico, such as Liverpool 's El Puerto , had only 5.9 million users and Walmart had only 4 million users.

In its report, Banco de Mexico said that total e-commerce traffic in Mexico increased by 12% year-on-year, with traffic from application channels increasing by 20% and web traffic increasing by 4%; the growth was mainly driven by the addition of new platforms, especially the launch of Temu last year.

However, despite Temu’s lead, it still lags behind its two big brothers: Mercado Libre , which has 28 million monthly active users on its app channel , and Amazon, which has 24.5 million .

In addition, although Temu's performance in the app channel is impressive, the situation is completely different in the website channel. Temu's website channel has only about half of the app's monthly active users - 7.2 million. But Mercado Libre and Amazon are still far ahead, with Mercado Libre 's monthly active users being 24.2 million and Amazon's being 30.6 million. Others, Liverpool 's website has 7.8 million monthly active users, Coppel also has 7.8 million, and Walmart has 10.5 million.

Experts specifically stated in the report that Chinese platforms are more popular among young Mexican consumers, especially those in the middle and lower economic classes, who will choose to wait longer for more affordable prices.

It is worth mentioning that data released by the analysis company Comscore at the end of last year showed that since its launch in the Mexican market, Temu's platform traffic has shown an exponential growth trend. As of the release of the report, Temu has become the third largest e-commerce platform in the local market, with the number of visitors second only to Mercado Libre and Amazon.

Putting aside the platform, Mexico is also an e-commerce market that deserves a detailed introduction.

According to the Online Retail Research released by the Mexican Online Sales Association ( AWVO) in the first quarter of this year, the size of Mexico's e-commerce market will reach 658 billion pesos (about 39.5 billion US dollars) in 2023, maintaining double-digit growth for five consecutive years. Compared with 2022, it has increased by 24.6%, becoming the fastest growing e-commerce market in the world. This growth rate also leaves behind the average growth rate of 10% of global e-commerce.

In addition, in 2023, nearly 66 million consumers in Mexico will purchase goods or services through online channels, accounting for 52% of the country's total population. Among them, nearly 40% of people shop online at least once a week.
