Landing in Japan, South Korean e-commerce giant Coupang enters overseas market for the first time!

Coupang, a South Korean e-commerce giant known for its "rocket delivery" , has taken its first step into overseas expansion . Its first overseas destination is Japan, the world's fourth largest e-commerce transaction market.

Because this is Coupang 's first overseas expansion since its listing on the New York Stock Exchange in March this year , it has attracted much attention.

According to Korea Daily Economic News, Coupang announced on June 3 that it will start trial operation of Coupang service in parts of Kanagawa, Tokyo from this month , and local consumers can order products ranging from fresh food to industrial products . However, Coupang 's delivery strategy in Japan may be different from that in South Korea.

In Japan, Coupang adopts the delivery service mode of "rocket delivery" and "Coupang Eats" which combines " rocket delivery" and "Coupang Eats " as the delivery service mode.

However, except for the Kanagawa area, there is no delivery in other parts of Japan , and the product categories are not yet limited . As a demonstration service to test the Japanese market, Coupang will conduct small-scale market testing and corrections in the region .

Coupang's overseas expansion was actually foreshadowed.

After announcing its first-quarter results on the 12th of last month , Coupang Chairman Kim Beom - seok said in a conference call : " The Korean e-commerce market, the world's largest and fastest-growing, is in a very early stage. If we find opportunities to expand overseas , we will discuss it. "

The scale of Japan's e-commerce transaction market is 19,360.9 billion yen (about 200 trillion won). However, if we look at the entire circulation market, e-commerce transactions only account for 8%. Although Amazon Japan ranks first in the Japanese e-commerce market , Coupang still has a lot of room for development .

Some analysts believe that with the express delivery industry in Japan subject to restrictions, local e-commerce companies have been trying to expand non-face-to-face pickup since last year, which has to some extent facilitated Cupang's entry into Japan.

A Coupang executive also said, "This is just a pilot program at the moment, and we will decide whether to expand it later . "
