According to the British GMB trade union , the workers' strike will cause the company at least 2 million pounds in losses, equivalent to more than 16 million yuan.
It is reported that more than 400 employees at a warehouse in Coventry, England, went on strike recently , which can be regarded as one of the largest strikes in British history.
People outside the warehouse loudly protested against the unfair treatment they received and called on everyone to unite against Amazon and strive for higher salary increases. In an interview, some employees said that they stayed at their posts during the worst period of the epidemic, but after enduring the hard times, Amazon did not make any statement.
Inflation in the UK has been very serious in the past two years, and coupled with rising energy prices, many workers' families have long been unable to make ends meet.
Francis, 24, is a warehouse assistant at Amazon who has worked there for four years. He said he would also strike if given the chance. "Although I am not a member of a union, I support workers striking and I hope there will be more strike actions in the future."
He believes the main problem is wages. "Salaries have been stagnant and are no longer competitive. People are already feeling the pinch of the cost of living crisis and wages are no longer enough to pay the bills."
However, salary is not the only reason for the strike, but it is more like the last straw that broke the camel's back. The strict assessment standards of Amazon warehouses have long been suffocating employees.
An Amazon worker who wishes to remain anonymous said that if your performance rating is in the bottom 5%, you will be called in for a talk by management, and if it happens more than three times, you will be fired. This forces employees to work very hard to meet their performance targets, which results in a greatly increased probability of injuries in the warehouse. However, despite the high pressure at work, many employees still choose not to participate in the strike, mainly because they are afraid of being fired and losing their jobs. In the United States, Amazon has made it clear that it will fire those who participate in the strike.
The battle between the two sides is far from over. There will be another five-day strike from March 13 to 17. The GMB union expects that this will cause huge losses to Amazon's revenue.
GMB senior organiser Amanda Guerin said: “The public and Amazon customers will be asking why the world’s most profitable company is willing to take a huge financial hit rather than resolve this dispute.”
Although British workers are fighting for their own interests, this will inevitably affect the delivery of sellers' orders. Some sellers can't help but sigh: "Why should workers make things difficult for workers!" Amazon strike |
