As October approaches, Halloween is getting closer.
A report shows that 69% of Americans plan to celebrate Halloween in 2022. This participation rate has hit a nearly four-year high. The increase in the number of people participating in the festival will drive up Halloween consumption this year.
NRF predicts that American consumers will spend $10.6 billion on Halloween this year, compared to $10.1 billion last year. Candy, decorations, and costumes are essential items for Halloween, and they will continue to be hot sellers this year! Consumers plan to spend an average of $100.
Decorations were a big focus for consumers, with 44% saying they planned to carve a pumpkin and more than half saying they were decorating their home or yard and planning to buy some new decorations.
Clothing will be the largest area of consumer spending. Total clothing spending is expected to exceed $3.6 billion, up from $3.3 billion last year. Adult clothing spending is expected to be $1.7 billion, pet clothing spending is expected to be $710 million, and children's clothing spending is expected to be $1.2 billion.
Spiderman was the most popular children's costume, with more than 2.2 million children wanting to buy it. Princess costumes were popular with 1.9 million kids this year, while classic witches and ghosts were popular with 1.6 million and 1.3 million consumers respectively. Other popular children's costumes included pirates, vampires, zombies, Batman and Superman.
Candy sales are also expected to grow this year. The NRF survey found that 67% of consumers plan to hand out candy to trick-or-treaters, and nearly 90% of those who plan to buy candy plan to buy chocolate. The National Confectioners Association said candy sales are expected to grow 5% this year.
It is worth noting that the cost of sugar, nuts, dairy products and imported cocoa has soared in recent years, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that from July to August, candy prices rose another 2%, 12.7% more expensive than a year ago. It is foreseeable that consumer demand for candy will drive prices up again this Halloween.
Price will affect consumers' shopping. The survey found that 37% of consumers said price would be the most important factor in their consideration of whether to buy candy, and 22% said the type of candy was the decisive factor in their purchase.
Although prices may affect consumers' Halloween shopping, overall this year's Halloween is still worth looking forward to. "Halloween is an exciting time for many American families, and the large number of Americans planning to celebrate this holiday this year reflects people's enthusiasm," said Matthew Shea, president and CEO of NRF. "As consumer behavior gradually becomes consistent with pre-pandemic behavior, retailers must be prepared to meet consumers' holiday needs and make this holiday fun and memorable." Halloween USA |
