According to Yeni Shafak, at the World E-Commerce Expo held in Turkey recently , Ismail Gulle, chairman of the Turkish Exporters' Congress (TIM), said that the country's e-commerce has grown fourfold in the past five years.
Ismail Gulle said that in the past five years, Turkey 's e-commerce volume has quadrupled , and the growth rate has been so rapid that it has reached 225 billion Turkish liras ( about 97.5 billion yuan ) in 2020. The current number of e-commerce users in the world has exceeded 3 billion, and these users spent 4.9 trillion US dollars ( about 31.2 trillion yuan ) on online platforms in 2021 alone .
According to industry insiders , e-commerce accounts for as much as 16% of Turkey's total trade , and this proportion will continue to rise with the development of major e-commerce platforms, the support of policies and laws, and the changes in life brought about by the epidemic .
In recent years, Turkey's e-commerce market has been developing rapidly. According to Statista's forecast, by 2022 , Turkey's e-commerce market will reach US$6.726 billion, making it the country with the fastest annual compound growth rate in the world's retail e-commerce.
Over the past 10 years, Turkey's GDP has grown at an average rate of nearly 5%, making it the world's 18th largest economy and the largest economy in the Middle East. With its rapid momentum and bright prospects , Turkey has become another booming emerging economy after the BRICS countries such as China, Russia, Brazil and South Africa .
Data shows that Turkey's total population exceeds 84 million, with a per capita GDP of nearly US$10,000 ( about RMB 64,000 ) , and great consumption potential. In addition, according to the latest report from the Turkish Statistical Institute, the Internet penetration rate among people aged 16-74 has increased from 79 % in the same period last year to 82.6%, far higher than the world average . Mobile phones have become the main online shopping channel. In 2020 alone, 67 % of the Turkish population shopped online , with 70.7 % of consumers preferring clothing , shoes and accessories, followed by electronics ( 58%) and personal care and beauty products (56.3%).
