New PYMNTS data shows that nearly 60% of online retail transactions in the United States last year were conducted on Amazon , and Amazon's share of the US e-commerce market is showing a step-by-step growth .
Data shows that in 2014 , Amazon's share of the US online retail market was only 28.1% ; in 2021, its share had doubled to 56.7%.
The survey results also show that Amazon dominates the US e-commerce market. Last year, Amazon's share of online sales increased by more than 3.5 percentage points . In contrast, Walmart has also seen a nearly 50% increase in e-commerce in the past two years , but its share of the e-commerce market is still far lower than Amazon.
That is to say , although Walmart has made great efforts to develop its e-commerce business , it lags nearly 10 times behind its competitor Amazon in online sales due to its over-reliance on 5,000 physical stores across the country .
Additionally, PYMNTS compared the two retail giants' best-selling categories in 2021.
The results show that Walmart dominates the food and beverage category with an 18.6% index share , while Amazon's best-selling categories in the United States are : clothing accessories , sporting goods, music and books, and furniture and home furnishings.
Official data from PYMNTS shows that as of the end of 2021, Amazon and Walmart accounted for 14.6% and 6.5% of the US apparel category respectively. Amazon also has a large market share in the sporting goods, music, and books markets . For Amazon, this is one of its revenue drivers , but for Walmart this category is a lagging area. In 2021, Amazon's share of this market was 16.9%, while Walmart's share of this market was only 3.4%.
For Amazon, the electronics and appliances market is also one of its best-selling categories. In 2021, Amazon accounted for 24.5% of the market. It is reported that this segment generated $108 billion in revenue for Amazon last year , accounting for about 21% of its total sales . In contrast, electronics and appliances only account for 5% of Walmart's total sales . Amazon US Market |
