The United States has seen inflation for 20 consecutive months, and e-commerce prices continue to rise

According to the latest Digital Price Index data released by Adobe , online prices in the United States rose again in January, with grocery prices increasing by a record 5.8% year-on-year .

Adobe reported that overall, online prices rose 2.7% year-over-year in January, marking the 20th consecutive month of e-commerce inflation. Compared with the previous month, prices rose 1.1%. However , January's increase was not as large as the annual gains recorded during the holiday season, when prices rose 3.5% year-over-year in November and 3.1% year-over-year in December.

Patrick Brown, vice president of marketing at Adobe , said that while price declines in categories such as electronics and apparel have brought online inflation down slightly from record highs last November , consumers are still struggling with rising prices in the digital economy.

Brown mentioned that at the time of the report , e-commerce inflation was particularly evident in categories such as groceries , where online prices continued to set new records while consumer demand for online grocery shopping remained increased.

Adobe tracks 18 categories of products . Five of the 18 categories saw year-over-year price declines in January -- electronics, jewelry, books , toys and computers -- while prices in the rest rose.

Apparel prices were up 15.75% year-over-year , but down 1.74% from December. Adobe said the decline from December helped lower the overall January number due to high online apparel sales. Apparel prices saw particularly large increases during the holiday season , with prices up 17.3% year-over-year in November and 16.6% in December.

Online grocery prices have risen for 24 consecutive months , with January's 5.8% increase exceeding the category 's previous high of 5.2% year-over-year growth in October 2020 .

Adobe also reported that the medical equipment and supplies category also saw record growth in January due to demand for Covid-19 testing kits, with the category growing 8.2% year-on-year .

Electronics prices fell 3.4% compared to January 2021. Adobe attributed the decline to a drop in overall inflation during the month. Toy prices also fell 5.96% compared to January of last year , but rose 3.1 % compared to December 2021, when holiday discounts kept toy prices in check .
