U.S. online sales to grow 14% in 2021

U.S. online sales to grow 14% in 2021

E-commerce market research organization Digital Commerce 360 released the 2021 US e-commerce sales report.

The report shows that US e-commerce sales continued to grow rapidly in 2021. According to estimates by market researchers, US consumers ' online spending increased by 14.3 % to US$871 billion in 2021. Although the growth rate is less than half of that in 2020 ( 31.8%) , US e-commerce sales this year still broke historical records .

Digital Commerce 360 said that compared with 2020, the e-commerce growth rate in the United States in 2021 was "normalized", and the 14% online sales growth rate was the same as the median growth rate in the five years before the epidemic .

"As much of the country became vaccinated in 2021, shoppers flocked back to stores, with e-commerce and offline sales in the U.S. growing at roughly the same rate last year, " Digital Commerce 360 said in the report.

Offline sales in the U.S. are estimated to have achieved a record 14.0% growth last year, more than five times the 2.6 % growth in 2020. However, even with the sharp increase in physical store sales , e-commerce sales have maintained rapid growth.

It is understood that the share of online retail in the total retail sales in the United States has been steadily increasing. However, due to the sharp increase in offline sales in 2021 , the penetration rate of online sales in the United States grew slowly last year. The report of Digital Commerce 360 believes that the penetration rate of e-commerce in the United States reached 19.2% in 2021. Compared with the growth rate of 19.1% in 2020 , it is basically the same .

According to data from the U.S. Department of Commerce, in the first quarter of 2021, U.S. e-commerce sales maintained the high growth momentum of 2020, with a year-on-year increase of 39.1%. However, starting from the second quarter, the growth rate began to slow down rapidly, reaching 9.2% in the second quarter and 6.8% in the third quarter . According to estimates by Digital Commerce 360, U.S. e-commerce sales in the fourth quarter increased by 9.4% year-on-year .

Amazon remains the leader in US e-commerce , and its share of the US e-commerce market will grow further in 2021 : sales currently account for 42% of total US e-commerce sales. Although Amazon's sales slowed down at the end of last year , the giant still leads the way . Among them, sales of third-party sellers on the Amazon platform increased by 17% last year to $364 billion.
