Global e-commerce forecast for 2022: Philippines and India lead

Recently, eMarketer, a world-renowned market research organization, released the 2022 e-commerce trend report, making predictions for the global and national e-commerce markets.

After two years of rapid growth, eMarketer expects global e-commerce spending to stabilize in 2022. However, even if growth slows, the incremental spending in the e-commerce market will be huge given the huge base .

The report data shows that this year, global e-commerce sales will exceed $5 trillion for the first time . At the same time, e-commerce retail sales will account for more than one-fifth of total retail sales . Although the growth rate of e-commerce sales will continue to slow, by 2025, global e-commerce total spending will soar to more than $7 trillion.

Among the major countries in the world counted by eMarketer, the Philippines and India will lead the world in terms of retail e-commerce sales growth this year , increasing by 25.9% and 25.5% respectively . Indonesia, Brazil, Vietnam, Argentina, Malaysia, Thailand and Mexico will rank third to ninth respectively.

Among the 10 fastest growing countries, Latin American and Southeast Asian countries will account for the majority, while the United States will rank last with a growth rate of 15.9%, making it the only developed economy to enter the top ten .

None of the Western European countries covered by eMarketer will see double-digit growth rates from the start of this year through the end of the forecast period in 2025. In contrast , every market covered by eMarketer in Latin America will see e-commerce sales grow at a double-digit rate .

In terms of e-commerce penetration, by 2022, China will still be the world's most penetrated e-commerce market, with 46.3% of the country 's retail sales occurring online . The next largest countries are the United Kingdom and South Korea, where e-commerce penetration rates will account for 36.3% and 32.2% of total retail sales, respectively. Denmark and Indonesia rank fourth with a penetration rate of 20.2%.

In terms of total e-commerce retail sales , China 's e-commerce market will reach nearly US$3 trillion , followed by the United States, whose e-commerce sales will exceed US$1 trillion and an e-commerce penetration rate of 16.1%. The UK's e-commerce sales will be approximately US$246 billion, and South Korea's will be approximately US$143 billion.
