E-commerce boom sees UK warehouses grow 60%

It is reported that the UK plans to build about 3.4 million square meters of warehouse space this year, which is an increase of more than 60% compared with last year.

The development of e-commerce has benefited not only sellers, but also related industries, such as warehouse construction, which is closely related to logistics. Warehouses are the latest craze in the UK real estate industry, and the construction area started this year will break the previous record. All these warehouse areas will have a reverse effect on the development of UK e-commerce.

According to analysis, for every £1 billion of online sales, approximately 130,000 square meters of warehouse space is required.

According to the data, the newly built warehouse area last year was about 2.14 million square meters, and about 1.95 million square meters in 2019. And as of the first half of this year, the total investment in warehouses in the UK has reached 700 million euros, far higher than 320 million in the same period last year, more than half of which came from other parts of Europe, as well as overseas countries such as China and the United States.

According to statistics for the first five months of this year, e-commerce currently accounts for 32% of all retail spending in the UK , compared to only 19% in 2019. This shows the momentum of e-commerce development in the UK. Under this circumstance, there is a sense of urgency in the demand for warehouses, logistics centers, etc.

Among them, Amazon is a typical representative. So far, Amazon has signed 18 leasing deals for warehouses, which shows Amazon's confidence in the UK market.

All of this is the result of the rapid development of e-commerce. Foreign media predict that the UK 's e-commerce sales will reach approximately 12.8 billion pounds in 2021. According to the latest news, as of July, the UK's e-commerce sales reached 10 billion pounds for the first time, setting a new historical record.

At the same time, consumers have higher requirements for logistics. To solve this problem, major logistics companies in the UK are also expanding their scale and providing Sunday delivery services.

In addition to the UK, warehouse demand in Europe is also in short supply. According to experts, in order to meet the development of local e-commerce, Europe will need to add thousands of warehouses and distribution centers. In the next five years, Europe will need to add 27.68 million square meters of storage space.

In addition to the major US market, European markets such as the UK are also worthy of sellers' attention.
