Amazon India to offer more in-store pickup for online orders

In order to better compete with BigBasket, Flipkart, Grofers and JioMart for market share in India, Amazon has begun promoting its in-store pickup service previously implemented at Whole Foods in the United States.

 

Consumers can purchase Amazon fresh groceries online and pick them up at the Whole Foods retail store nearest them , which is somewhat similar to domestic Meituan Youxuan and Taobao grocery shopping.

 

It is reported that currently online grocery orders from buyers in Bengaluru, India can be picked up from the nearest More retail store within two to three hours. It should be noted that these orders do not support cash on delivery.

 

Amazon, in partnership with private equity firm Samara Capital, acquired the More retail chain from the Aditya Birla Group in 2019.

 

Apart from Bengaluru, Amazon has also rolled out support for the service in other parts of India.

 

“Some companies are exploring new operating models and store pickup seems to be a popular hyperlocal model. It remains to be seen to what extent Indian consumers prefer home delivery and store pickup after placing an order,” said Arpit Mathur, partner at management consulting firm Kearney.

 

An Amazon India spokesperson also said: "We are committed to providing a smooth and seamless shopping experience to customers across the country and will continue to improve our operational capabilities for faster logistics delivery."

 

According to the editor, when customers shop on Amazon Fresh, they can choose any two hours as delivery time between 6:00 a.m. and midnight.

 

As long as the customer's order amount exceeds 600 rupees, they can get free two-hour delivery service. Orders below this standard can also use the service by paying an additional 29 rupees. Amazon Fresh does not have any requirements for the minimum order amount.

 

We will have to wait and see how the in-store pickup service performs in the Indian market compared to the US market.
