Online shopping to account for 51% of global sales post-pandemic

Foreign media reported that after the pandemic, online shopping will account for more than half of global retail sales as the online market will account for the largest share of revenue.

According to Wunderman Thompson Commerce’s 2021 Future Shopper Report, which surveyed 28,000 consumers in 17 countries, 51% of global retail sales will be completed online after the pandemic.

The pandemic has accelerated a permanent shift in consumer shopping habits toward online shopping and introduced many new shoppers to the medium . 60 % of respondents said they prefer to use an online shopping system , and 72% said online shopping helped them in 2020.

Last year, 42% of all online spending worldwide was conducted through e-commerce platforms such as Amazon, Ebay and Alibaba . Based on current trends, these online tech giants may continue to dominate after the pandemic . In the future e-commerce market , 64% of consumers said they expect to purchase all goods through one platform.

The continued rise in fear of shopping in physical stores has also led to the growing prominence of online retail, with 41% of consumers saying they are afraid to return to physical stores.

“E-commerce can no longer be viewed as a channel that supplements sales , ” said Hugh Fletcher, global head of consulting and innovation at Wunderman Thompson Commerce.

“Shoppers around the world have made it clear that online shopping will be the primary channel for their retail purchases in the future. For some organizations , especially marketplaces , they are reaping the rewards of investing in a strong online presence . During the pandemic, the news was filled with stories of brick-and-mortar retailers that failed to capitalize on these changing demands and were going out of business .

2021 and beyond will usher in an era of more diverse online products, with e-commerce platforms , direct-to-consumer brand websites and social platforms all playing a key role.

Businesses must ensure that this more sophisticated online environment complements their overall retail offering which needs to span both digital and physical, said Hugh Fletcher, global head of consulting and innovation at Wunderman Thompson Commerce .
