More than 90% of Britons consider ethical factors when shopping

On July 5, according to foreign media Internet Retailing, payment platform cashflow recently released a new study to understand the impact of the new crown epidemic on British consumers' shopping habits .

More Britons are buying things for ethical reasons, but price, quality and convenience remain top of their purchasing decisions, research shows.

Among them, 91% of British consumers said that they are actively looking for ethical products, and even 35% of consumers said that they are more motivated to practice this concept than before the epidemic.

Among the main online shopping consumer group of 18-35 years old , the proportion of people who adhere to the concept of ethical shopping has risen to 45% , and this proportion is even higher among consumers in the central city of London, at 47% . In addition, among this age group, 32% of people are more likely to choose cruelty-free products , and 30% will pay attention to buying products with recycled packaging /no plastic .

Among the respondents aged 56 and above , more than 40% value local products (43%) and products made in the UK (42%) when shopping .

Regarding the choice of shopping platforms, 39% of respondents said that compared with before the epidemic, they bought more goods on large platforms such as Amazon, and only 11% reduced their purchases . In addition, the situation of independent sites is more complicated. Since the beginning of the epidemic , 24% of British people have increased their online shopping at independent site stores, and 23% have reduced their purchases on independent sites.

62 % of British people said that they like to buy goods provided by local suppliers, and nearly three-quarters (70%) of consumers would rather spend 10% more to buy goods from local suppliers . However, only 28% of British consumers choose to buy from large companies or large online shopping platforms , which means that e-commerce sellers have lost at least 60% of consumer groups.

Currently, 12% of Brits feel guilty about shopping on Amazon, while 27% of respondents would feel proud to shop local.

It is worth noting that the pleasure of buying a product mostly comes from the act of buying it, rather than receiving or using it . Among young consumers aged 18-35 , 27 % said that opening a package brings more joy than using it for the first time or sharing it. The survey also found that more than one-fifth (22%) of consumers admitted that they didn't even remember what they bought in the past year.

Amanda Mesler, CEO of payments platform Cashflow, commented: “ More and more Brits are considering ethical factors when shopping, which creates a huge business opportunity for independent retailers, but given that price, quality and convenience remain top considerations, retailers need to work harder in these areas.”
