Fisher-Price, a unit of California-based Mattel Inc , said it was recalling one model of its 2-in-1 infant bassinet after four babies died of suffocation after being placed in the bassinet without being restrained .
Comfort bassinets pose a suffocation risk
Fisher-Price said in a joint statement with the Consumer Product Safety Commission on Friday that it is recalling its 4-in-1 Rock 'n Glide Soothing Rocker , which is designed to mimic the motion of a baby being rocked in someone's arms.
The deaths between April 2019 and February 2020 were a 4-month-old in Missouri, a 2-month-old in Nevada, a 2-month-old in Michigan and an 11-week-old in Colorado, according to the statement .
At the same time, Fisher-Price is recalling a similar product : the 2-in-1 Soothe 'n Play Gliders, although no deaths have been reported associated with them.
"Inclined products, such as gliders, soothers, rockers and swings, are not safe for infants to sleep in due to the hazard of suffocation," said Robert Adler , acting chairman of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission .
Products are mainly sold to the United States and Canada
Fisher-Price general manager Chuck Scothon said the company was committed to educating parents and caregivers about the safe use of its products.
From January 2014 to December 2020, approximately 120,000 4-in-1 Rock 'n Glide Soothers and 55,000 2-in-1 Soothe 'n Play Gliders were sold in the U.S. for approximately $108. 2-in-1 Soothe 'n Play Gliders , sold in the United States from November 2018 to May 2021 .
There are also 25,000 4-in-1 Rock 'n Glide Soothers and 27,000 2-in-1 Soothe 'n Play Gliders distributed in Canada.
In Canada, the recall affects Fisher-Price 4-in-1 Rock 'n Glide models CBT81, CHP55 and CHP56. Soothers, as well as Fisher-Price 2-in-1 Soothe 'n Play Gliders model number GDD28 , and the models mentioned by Health Canada in the recall warning , including: GDD39, GDD41, GGW85, GNX43, GVG43 and HBT17 .
The products have two modes of use: a power glider seat and an infant bouncer, in both of which the bouncer can move from head to toe or side to side, Health Canada said.
Health Canada warns that babies pose a suffocation risk if left unrestrained and unsupervised in these rocking chairs .
"Canadian consumers should immediately stop using the product and contact Mattel for a full or partial refund , " Health Canada said.
We would like to remind sellers that they need to be extremely careful when handling baby toys. There is a risk of suffocation when reclining rocking chairs and small toys are used together, so you need to be vigilant. Online Shopping E-commerce USA Canada |
