Tokopedia remains at the top of Southeast Asia and Indonesia's e-commerce platforms

Tokopedia has taken the top spot in the list of the best retailers in Indonesia, including Southeast Asia, Euromonitor International said in its report. The startup is among the top 100 retailers in Asia for 2021 .


" Tokopedia has taken the top spot in Indonesia and Southeast Asia's retail industry, " Euromonitor International wrote in a recent report. The top three in Asia are Alibaba ( $376 million), JD.com ($261 million) and Aeon Group ($79 million).


Tokopedia ranked 26th with $11.683 billion. The startup is located between Apple, which ranked 27th, and Sea Ltd, the parent company of Shopee, which ranked 31st. In the Southeast Asian market, Tokopedia ranked first.


“E-commerce platforms like Tokopedia, Shopee and Lazada have played a major role in digitizing brands that were only active in the offline space,” the report further reads.


In Indonesia, Tokopedia, Sea Ltd (Shopee), Salim Group, Alfaria Trijaya and Bukalapak are the top five local platforms .


The report also noted that overall, Southeast Asia’s retail value is expected to grow 6.7% over the next five years , from 2021 to 2025.


On the other hand, Gojek and Tokopedia have officially announced the establishment of the Goto Group. It is called the largest corporate cooperation in Indonesia and the largest cooperation between two Internet and service companies in Asia to date.


Kemkominfo (Ministry of Information and Communications) also expressed congratulations and pride on the establishment of GoTo Group . Dedy Permadi, spokesperson for Kemkominfo, said: "This merger is one of the important milestones in the development of Indonesia's digital ecosystem. This merger also demonstrates Indonesia's position as a country that uses digital technology to take advantage of the pandemic opportunities. "


On the other hand, according to Dedy Permadi, the Kemkominfo Communications and Information Ministry will continue to encourage the acceleration of Indonesia's digital transformation by ensuring data governance , controlling digital content, cultivating digital literacy and digital talents, and allocating digital infrastructure.


It is expected that this merger effort will also continue to focus on the economic empowerment of Indonesians , especially the development of local businesses , Dedy Permadi concluded.


According to reports , GoTo Group is said to be combining the strengths of Gojek and Tokopedia to combine e-commerce services, delivery of goods and food, transportation, and finance .


Gojek's Andre Soelistyo will lead GoTo as group CEO, while Tokopedia's Patrick Cao will serve as GoTo's president. Meanwhile, Kevin Aluwi will continue to serve as Gojek's CEO. The current Tokopedia CEO is William Tanuwijaya
