NRF (National Retail Federation) conducted a Mother's Day spending survey among 7,818 American adult consumers from April 1 to 9, and recently released the survey results. Let's take a look! The survey results show that 83% of consumers plan to celebrate Mother's Day this year, and total spending on Mother's Day this year is expected to reach a record high of US$28.1 billion . Additionally, consumers plan to spend an average of $220.48 , $16 more than they planned to spend last year and the highest level in the survey's history.
Looking at different age groups, consumers aged 25-34 have made a significant contribution to the increase in Mother's Day consumer spending. These consumers plan to spend an average of $367.08, an increase of $99 from last year. Moreover, these consumers are most likely to plan to buy high-priced gifts such as jewelry or electronics. Not only that, in addition to buying gifts for their own mothers, these consumers are also likely to buy goods for their spouses, grandmothers or friends. NRF also surveyed consumers on the products they plan to purchase and listed the top ten most popular gifts, namely greeting cards ( 72%), flowers (68%), travel (49%), gift cards (47%), clothing/accessories (40%), jewelry (35%), household goods/gardening tools (26%), personalized services (25%), books/CDs (23%) and electronic products (20%) .
Among them, jewelry and electronic products performed quite well. From the above data, we can find that compared with last year, the total expenditure on Mother's Day this year increased by 1.4 billion US dollars. Among the increased expenditure, jewelry accounted for more than half ( 59%), while electronic products accounted for more than a quarter (28%) . In addition, the epidemic continues to affect the shopping destination choices of American consumers. According to NRF's survey results, more than a third ( 34%) of consumers plan to buy Mother's Day gifts online, which is higher than the pre-pandemic level . In addition to ordering goods online, consumers also plan to shop at department stores ( 28%) , specialty stores such as florists or jewelry stores ( 26%) and small businesses (23%). Previously, Snapchat conducted a survey on platform users on Mother's Day and Father's Day and found that consumers attach particular importance to Mother's Day and Father's Day this year after experiencing too much uncertainty in 2020. 67 % of American Snapchatters plan to celebrate the holidays with their families, and 46% of global Snapchatters plan to buy gifts to express their gratitude. From the above survey results, we can find that this year consumers may invest more enthusiasm and money in festivals such as Mother's Day, and sellers can also pay more attention to this.
