A student from Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics recently posted that he was banned by Amazon because he filled in the school's delivery address when shopping on Amazon.com. All the e-books he had bought with the account were lost .
The student said: "I bought something from Amazon, but my account was blocked. This was even though I didn't write the name of the school, but only wrote 37 Xueyuan Road. All the Kindle books in my account were directly reimbursed. Everyone should take this as a warning."
After the student contacted Amazon's customer service, Amazon responded. According to the email message Amazon replied, the account was blocked in order to "comply with sanctions and export control regulations." Amazon said that the student's account information had "similarities with organizations that cannot currently do business with it."
The "organization with which business cannot be conducted" here refers to the Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics. Like the domestic mobile phone giant Huawei, the Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics has also been included in the US sanctions list. Not only the Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, some netizens reported that their Sichuan University research group had also encountered similar situations before.
The 2019 updated sanctions list by the U.S. Department of Commerce shows that in addition to companies and enterprises, a number of Chinese universities are also on the list, including Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, National University of Defense Technology, Sichuan University, and Northwestern Polytechnical University. At the end of last year, the U.S. Department of Commerce updated the sanctions list again, adding five universities including Beijing Institute of Technology, Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Nanjing University of Science and Technology, and Tianjin University to the sanctions list.
Some netizens said: "There was a period of time when a certain brand of monitor from a certain university could not even be covered by warranty if the repair was reported in the name of the unit." In the comments under the relevant Weibo post, netizens were not only outraged by this, but also called on domestic e-commerce platforms to go overseas as soon as possible. They believed that the service provided by Amazon was not that good, and that this move was even more like "using chicken feathers as a flag."
In fact, any unit on the sanctions list needs the approval of the US government if it wants to trade with US companies. This is actually a US technological sanction. As an American company, Amazon must also abide by the laws and regulations formulated by the US government.
As for Chinese citizens and enterprises, what they can do now is to accelerate technological transformation, strengthen technological innovation, and achieve true independence in core technologies and products, so as to break through the US technological blockade as soon as possible.
