Mother's Day boosts Etsy sales, platform uses social media to drive traffic to sellers

Newman, the fictional postal carrier on the TV sitcom Seinfeld, believes Mother’s Day may be “the mother of all mail days , but it’s also arguably the mother of all shopping holidays on the online marketplace Etsy.

 

Executives have openly discussed the fact that many consumers only think of Etsy for special occasions , and that it is trying to get them to consider its Etsy platform for more “buying occasions .” But that doesn’t stop consumers from taking advantage of the Etsy platform when traditional gift-giving occasions arise .

 

Etsy has been promoting its marketplace as a source for Mother's Day gifts in marketing emails and social media posts. It hasn't shared details of its Mother's Day marketing campaign, but its strategy includes enticing sellers to help.

 

This week, Etsy encouraged sellers to go to their social network accounts and promote their Etsy stores to attract Mother's Day gift shoppers .

 

As with Valentine's Day, Etsy created hashtags and graphics for sellers to use when posting on social media, and opened a thread on its discussion boards where sellers can post links from Instagram , Facebook , Pinterest or TikTok to promote their Mother's Day gifts on the Etsy platform .

 

Etsy is also asking sellers to update their social media profiles to include links to their Etsy shops , which the company says is "a quick and easy way for people who discover your products on social media to find your store. "

 

This year, Etsy received praise on social media for giving customers the opportunity to opt out of receiving Mother’s Day marketing emails. In mid-March, Etsy sent the following message to customers:

 

"We know Mother's Day can be a tough time for some. If you would like to opt out of receiving Mother's Day emails from us this year, please let us know by clicking the button below. Even if there is no Mother's Day news, we will still let you know about a find we think you will enjoy."

 

But it is worth noting that some sellers believe that sending traffic from social media to Etsy is risky . As early as February, sellers believed that the system was just a means for Etsy to charge sellers more fees. However, for Mother's Day, the platform's traffic diversion method can still bring a certain amount of traffic to sellers.
