Foreign media reported that a seller said that he had been selling products on eBay for 25 consecutive years and had encountered various situations and problems, but an incident that suddenly broke out on April 21 still made them very confused. After talking with eBay's customer service staff (including a supervisor), they were even more shocked.
On March 31, 2021, a buyer from Germany purchased a pair of 925 sterling silver pin earrings in the shape of a manatee from the seller's eBay store. The seller then packed the goods and sent them through the Kentucky Global Shipping Program in Florida. On April 9, 2021, the seller received a message from eBay stating that the package was a restricted item and had therefore been returned.

The seller received the package on April 21, 2020. When contacting eBay CS, they responded: " We recommend that you delete the word 'manatee' in the title and detailed description . " In other words, the seller needs to delete the description of the shape of the earrings in more than 1,000 listings and can only use words such as 925 sterling silver to describe the product.
Now, the seller’s store is also accused of having more than 1,000 duplicate listings.
"It makes our brains explode," the seller wrote in a letter to the media. "The most incredible thing is that such a ridiculous statement came from a CS director at eBay! What idiot employee in the global shipping organization or eBay's artificial intelligence would think that this 4"x4"x2" 4-ounce box really contains a 1,000-pound marine mammal!"

The seller finally complained: "It's time to close our eBay store!"
The seller's complaints also attracted a lot of attention from netizens and sellers, with some commenting that "eBay's algorithm is synonymous with extreme stupidity!"
Another seller said, "Yeah, eBay and their robots never have any common sense. A few years ago, they closed my listing, and the listing was just for a homemade doll made from an Ivory Soap plastic bottle, and eBay thought I used parts from endangered species!"
In fact, Ivory soap is only named because of its ivory-white color, not to mention that this homemade doll actually uses a plastic bottle of Ivory soap.
Someone else gave a very nice and calm suggestion: "I don't think eBay will close your store because of such a small thing. You just need to add some creativity to your product descriptions and you will be fine." Someone else suggested that the seller replace the word "manatee" with "sea cow." listing E-commerce platform eBay Platform |
