2020 was a bumper year for Russian e-commerce. Half of the players in the top 100 e-commerce platforms in 2019 saw an increase in online sales of 24%, while half of the players in the top 100 e-commerce platforms in 2020 saw an increase in online sales of more than 48% and an increase in orders of more than 42%.
Data Insight data shows that in 2020, the top 100 Russian e-commerce platforms delivered a total of 719 million orders, almost double last year (370 million). The total sales of these 100 players also almost doubled from 1.17 trillion rubles to 2.094 trillion rubles.
Compared with 2019, this year's list has many highlights, with 17 new platforms successfully entering the list. Boris Ovchinnikov, an expert at Data Insight, said : " In some cases, they entered the top 100 because their ratings were optimized. But in most cases, it is due to rapid growth."
Among the 17 new platforms, five are e-grocery , including Sbermarket, Vkusvill, Yandex.Lavka, Samokat and Pyaterochka. Experts believe that Sbermarket has the greatest growth potential, with its turnover increasing 13 times last year.
The emergence of newcomers also means that some old hands are "eliminated" . Stores like Ulmart, Oldi, Masmsy, Aizel, Mytoys and others failed to survive in 2020, and the reasons are also different. Ulmart's legal proceedings are still ongoing, and its website has ceased operations. Oldi, which was on the verge of death a year ago, now only has an online store. Mytoys has been left far behind by the rapid growth of its competitor Detsky Mir.
