Cambodia, Japan JICA work together to improve logistics system

Cambodia is understood to be working with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) on an ongoing project to improve Cambodia’s logistics system in order to increase freight efficiency by reducing shipping costs and internationally competitive logistics.

The project , dubbed “Implementation of the Project to Improve Cambodia’s Logistics System (Phase II)” was launched on Monday during a video conference attended by Japan International Cooperation Agency representative to Cambodia Haruko Kamei, government officials and other stakeholders .

Koy Sodany, secretary of state at the Ministry of Public Works and Transport , said the meeting was aimed at gathering opinions and feedback from all stakeholders with the goal of establishing a database and information system for the smooth and efficient implementation of the project.

She said developing a national logistics master plan was key to reducing transport costs, which would enable Cambodia to attract investors and create jobs.

She also said : “In order to make Cambodia’s logistics system more developed, the country needs to delve into the national logistics master plan, based on the spirit of solidarity , improve the effective transportation system and keep pace with the world’s modernization.

Sin Chanthy, president of the Cambodia Freight Forwarders Association , told The Washington Post that Cambodia’s lack of good and efficient infrastructure compared to its neighbors is a key factor contributing to high transportation costs .

However , he said ongoing construction and rehabilitation of roads, airports and ports would help reduce transport costs to some extent.

Now, the epidemic situation in Cambodia is severe. It is understood that many express delivery companies strictly abide by the government's epidemic prevention and management regulations, insist on strict disinfection and protection work in all operation links, and take the lead in "contactless delivery" to safeguard the health and safety of consumers.

The government will step up its anti-epidemic efforts in the coming days and weeks to stop the spread of the epidemic and encourage the public to reduce or stop unnecessary travel. Given Cambodia's current weak medical conditions, epidemic prevention and control is a test of humanity and a battle for all the people.
