Coupang platform increases investment to increase education and original content

E-commerce company Coupang has made huge investments in its streaming service Coupang Play to pick up pace in South Korea's highly competitive OTT market.

Coupang announced on Monday its plans to partner with well-known educational publishers to focus on education on the content base of its streaming service, targeting an older age group.

"We hope that more users will discover and use Coupang Play as it expands its educational content and allows both parents and children to enjoy its services , " the company said.

Coupang Play was launched in December last year. WOW is Coupang's premium membership service . After the launch of the platform, WOW users will receive free overnight delivery service.

For WOW users, all they need to do is download the app and connect it to the Coupang main app to immediately enjoy unlimited video streaming, without having to go through the registration process. In addition, WOW members can also download most content on Coupang Play so they can watch it anytime, anywhere, which is perfect for long trips and places with poor internet connections.

Kim Sung-han, head of Coupang Play, said in a statement: "Coupang Play is constantly working to improve the lives of customers by introducing and expanding its business scope and continuously improving the customer experience. We are strengthening educational content to provide Coupang's WOW members with a more meaningful experience. We plan to continue adding more content to meet the various needs of users. "

The platform will officially launch an education section , which will publish learning content from top English learning publications such as Hacker, YBM and BBC English and exam preparation materials. The service will also offer exclusive learning videos in OTT, including the "Learn to Read" series and video materials from the digital textbook platform i-Scream .

However, competitors see the platform's move as an attempt to gain a foothold in the Korean streaming service market .

The Korean OTT media market, dominated by streaming platform Netflix, has been committed to increasing content diversity and is expected to face more intense competition from U.S. streaming giants Disney and Apple TV in the near future .
