Amazon has helped 2.5 million small and medium enterprises in India to digitize

Amazon India said on Thursday that it has digitized 2.5 million small and medium enterprises, enabled cumulative exports to reach $3 billion and created nearly 1 million jobs in the country.

Last year, Amazon announced an investment of $1 billion in India to digitize 10 million small and medium-sized enterprises by 2025, achieve $10 billion worth of e-commerce exports, and create 1 million new jobs in India.

Amit Agarwal, senior vice president and country head, Amazon India, told TOI: “Since Sambhav’s last announcement (in January 2020), over 250,000 new sellers have come online and joined Amazon, and the pace of seller onboarding has increased by 50% post- Covid .

He said nearly a third of these sellers are registered in local Indian languages such as Hindi, Tamil, Kannada and Marathi.

He added that its 'local shop' programme, which brings shops near kirana online, has grown tenfold in the past six months to over 50,000 offline retailers.

Agarwal said, “Cumulatively 2.5 million SMEs, hundreds of thousands are coming online every year and the number is rising. We are very confident of continuing the momentum in this space and digitizing 10 million SMEs by 2025.”

He noted that Amazon's export program, Global Selling , took three years to achieve its first $1 billion in cumulative exports , while the second $1 billion was achieved in 18 months and the third $1 billion in just 12 months. Currently, more than 70,000 sellers participate in the program.

In addition, he added that Amazon had created about 700,000 jobs as of last year , and 300,000 jobs during the pandemic , for a total of 1 million jobs .

He said: "I think this is a very important milestone for e-commerce in India, which can promote India's economic recovery and create more jobs in India. "
