Flipkart partners with Mahindra Logistics to accelerate use of electric vehicles for last-mile deliveries

India's largest e-commerce platform Flipkart has partnered with Mahindra Logistics to accelerate the use of electric vehicles in last-mile delivery and will deploy more than 25,000 electric vehicles in its fleet by 2030, according to a regulatory filing .

The logistics arm of the Mahindra Group has already launched EDEL, an electric last-mile delivery service in six cities and is working with companies in the consumer and e-commerce sectors to provide such services.

According to the filing, Mahindra Logistics will play a key role in partnering with various original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and helping Flipkart in its sustainable transition to electric vehicles.

Flipkart has also been working with many OEMs and has introduced two-wheeler and three-wheeler electric vehicles in its supply chain. Flipkart said that the partnership with Mahindra Logistics EDEL will further drive this momentum and help in nationwide deployment, further strengthening infrastructure and technical support including charging, tracking, assets, security and cost.

According to the filing, EDEL's strong presence in multiple cities including Bengaluru, Mumbai, Delhi, Pune, Kolkata and Hyderabad, with plans to cover top 20 cities by the end of the year, will help drive a seamless and phased transition of Flipkart's pan-India supply chain towards electric vehicles.

Flipkart also recently announced partnerships with electric vehicle manufacturers such as Hero Electric, Mahindra Electric and Piaggio to deploy electric vehicles in its logistics fleet across the country.

Hemant Badri, senior vice president of supply chain at Flipkart Group, was quoted as saying: “Electrification of the logistics fleet is an important part of Flipkart’s larger sustainability goals and a key focus area for the company.”

He added that through collective efforts, Flipkart aims to build and support solutions that promote EV adoption across the country and gradually transition to 100% EVs in our logistics fleet.

In August last year , Flipkart became the first e-commerce marketplace in India to join the EV100 initiative, which aims to bring together companies working to accelerate the development of electric vehicles. Earlier this year, Amazon India also announced that it would induct around 10,000 electric vehicles in its fleet by 2025.
