Australia's crackdown hits, new measures affect multiple cross-border e-commerce giants

Safety issues have always been a focus of attention for people from all walks of life, and new measures regarding safety issues in various places have attracted even more attention from sellers, because if they are not careful, they may lose both money and property.

According to foreign media reports, the Australian Consumer Commission ( ACCC) recently held the 2021 National Consumer Conference. This safety conference mainly announced the products that will be subject to key supervision in the Australian market in 2021 and related safety supervision measures that will take effect in October this year.

At present, the Australian sites of many e-commerce platforms such as Amazon, eBay, AliExpress and Catch.com.au have signed the security agreement (Australian Product Safety Commitment issued by the ACCC in November 2020) and promised to do their best to protect consumers from safety. The ACCC has stated that it will strictly supervise the above four major e-commerce platforms.

The ACCC stated that platforms and buyers selling products in Australia must pay attention to product safety, as it will strengthen inspections on product safety. Its first-of-its-kind button battery standards and safety management of infant products will be the focus of supervision in 2021.

Australian sellers must be aware that the ACCC strictly regulates the following 5 key products based on its core product safety function:

1. Carry out education, supervision and law enforcement work related to automobile safety standards.

2. Strictly supervise furniture that is prone to tipping over and formulate effective risk control measures.

3. Focus on the supervision of unsafe infant and toddler products.

4. Implement new standards for products that are prone to safety issues, such as buttons and batteries.

5. Monitor and enhance product safety in online markets.

According to ACCC data, more than a thousand Australians are injured or killed every year due to the collapse of furniture and related home products such as televisions. In fact, not only in Australia, but also in many countries such as the United States and Canada, there have been repeated reports of children dying and adults being injured due to furniture tipping. This is a very sad fact. While consumers suffer, sellers will also face a series of problems such as product declines and recalls.

In fact, product quality and safety issues have already sounded a wake-up call for sellers. Sellers need to stay sober at all times and put product safety issues first in order to gain a foothold in the market, while also avoiding unnecessary losses due to such issues.
