During the National Day in 2020, a group of southern businessmen came to a rural area in Shandong and saw another side of the cross-border e-commerce industry besides the fierce competition among Internet giants: rural areas, peasant women and agricultural products.

 

Dongzhang Village is located in the northern part of Shandong Province. A big Shandong man brought a dozen left-behind rural women to buy small commodities here and sold them to Southeast Asia and Taiwan, China.

 

From 2016 to now, the team has grown to a size of 300 employees and generated more than 30 million in profit in 2020, relying on a common agricultural and sideline product in the north: dried sweet potato.

 

In the fall of 2020, an employee of the company brought his own dried sweet potatoes to the company, took photos and videos and posted them on Facebook to test users' willingness to buy. If there are many comments, it means that customers are more willing to buy this product. At first, almost everyone was not optimistic about dried sweet potatoes - this is too common and too unfashionable...

 

However, on the first day of the test sales of dried sweet potatoes, the sales data of dried sweet potatoes on the performance summary sheet was particularly good, and no one knew why it sold so well.

 

However, managers have been immersed in the market for a long time, and their keen sense of hot-selling products has made them aware of opportunities: when customers' attention is focused on a product for a short period of time, it means that the code to wealth that is hard to come by is right before their eyes.

 

The core team immediately took action to promote the product within a limited time, and sold more than 300 orders in one day. Employees used the Facebook group function to post hot posts with text, pictures and videos, waiting for interested consumers to come and inquire about prices or further communicate. The Shandong team did a good job in marketing and customer service, and after confirming the purchase intention and precautions with the customer, the Guangdong team responsible for logistics and delivery shipped the goods from the local area to the customer.

 

Selling on Facebook is not much easier than on Amazon. For a while, Facebook carried out a platform-wide cleanup and cleaned up a large number of accounts. A large number of company accounts were also restricted from activity.

 

This is also an iron rule of Facebook: once an account starts selling products, it cannot stop. No matter how busy you are every day, you must post information about several products on your personal updates, otherwise it will soon be judged as a zombie account.

 

In recent years, the government has maintained a strong supportive attitude towards cross-border e-commerce and rural e-commerce. Data released at a press conference held by the Shandong Provincial Government in January this year showed that in 2020, cross-border e-commerce imports and exports in Shandong Province increased by 366.2%, and market procurement trade exports increased by 84.5%.

 

Shandong Province's trade scale and international market share also hit historical highs, with annual exports of 1.3 trillion yuan, an increase of 17.3%, and cross-border direct purchase exports of 3.83 billion yuan, an increase of 81.4%.

 

With the help of this favorable wind, this cross-border village on the top of the mountain has also made great progress. In 2020, Dezhou City, Shandong Province conducted an average wage survey on more than 200,000 people in 17 industries in the secondary industry under its jurisdiction. The average wage in Qingyun County was around 10,000 yuan, ranking low in the city, while the monthly income of some employees of the company has far exceeded this average.
