Shopify expands rapidly in Asia Pacific, with Australia's GMV soaring 118%!

Shopify, an independent website building platform founded in Ottawa, Canada in 2004, has not only flourished in the US and Canadian markets, but has also been conquering the other side of the earth in recent years, such as New Zealand and Australia .

According to Shopify data, the number of merchants served by the company in New Zealand increased by 56% in 2020, and GMV (gross merchandise volume) also increased by 97% year -on-year. The development of independent e-commerce websites in New Zealand is naturally inseparable from the aggressive epidemic last year. As consumers flock to online stores, New Zealand's e-commerce market has accelerated its development.

Shopify's development momentum in Australia cannot be underestimated. Data shows that the number of registered Shopify merchants in Australia has exceeded 100,000, the number of stores opened has increased by 76% year-on-year compared to 2019, and GMV has soared by 118% year-on-year!

Shopify said that the rapid growth in the number of independent stations in New Zealand and Australia reflects the growing entrepreneurship around the world, especially the rapid rise of female entrepreneurs. Most of Shopify's registered businesses are run by female entrepreneurs, accounting for 61% in New Zealand and Australia, higher than Shopify's 53% worldwide.

Shaun Broughton, Shopify’s Asia Pacific director , commented: “As the pandemic has accelerated economic and social change, more entrepreneurs are seeking more flexibility and independence, which in turn has fueled their entrepreneurial passion.”

He added: "The pandemic has not only changed the way New Zealand consumers shop, but has also raised their expectations for interactions and customer experiences with retailers - online, in-store and during product delivery ."

As a result, the number of stores with local delivery options has more than doubled since the pandemic began, and local retailers like JB Hi-Fi, Aje, Peter Sheppard and Thermomix are investing heavily in listening to customers, improving the shopping experience and meeting the needs of consumers as the seasons change.

"Over the past 12 months, we have been committed to helping every business improve their ability to respond to the crisis during the pandemic ... This year we will continue to serve businesses with the same dedication, so that consumers and entrepreneurs can uniquely respond to the challenges of the coming months," said Broughton.
