As a category that continues to sell well, toys are highly favored by consumers, but regulatory issues such as quality inspection and regulations regarding toys are also a cause for concern for many sellers.
Etsy releases new EU toy regulations
Recently, Etsy released new rules on toy sales in the European Union. Etsy said that regardless of where the seller is located, the product listings on its platform will be automatically set to ship worldwide. In other words, sellers in all countries should be aware that the new rules will be enforced and apply to all toy sellers.
It is reported that Europe's toy safety regulations are very strict and are one of the strictest rules in the world. EU regulations require that new products manufactured in EU countries and imported from third countries , whether they are new or second-hand (including antique toys), must comply with relevant legal provisions from the date they are put on the market.
The new regulations also show that the requirement will take effect in July 2021 , and every seller must assume this series of obligations. In addition, from July 16, 2021, non-EU manufacturers must indicate the name and contact information of the manufacturer or authorized agent in the EU market on their product packaging when selling toys to the EU market.
Etsy declined to comment on whether specific products meet this standard, and sellers need to consult relevant regulatory experts to ensure whether these products are subject to EU regulations.
Online GMV reaches US$10 billion
Etsy's latest financial report shows that in 2020, its total online merchandise sales reached $10 billion, and its revenue doubled to $1.73 billion. In the fourth quarter in particular, its total sales in the fourth quarter more than doubled to $3.61 billion, which also more than doubled the revenue it generated.
Previously, EU regulations had clearly defined the toy category as products designed specifically for children under 14 years of age, regardless of whether they are for children. In addition, some toy products that are not included are listed, and sellers need to understand them in detail, because there will be corresponding regulations to require these products.
Sellers need to note that before putting toys on the EU market, they must conduct a series of compliance operations, such as safety assessment, drafting an EC declaration of conformity, and affixing the CE mark directly to the label or packaging of the toy, to prevent product safety regulations from being involved.
