Online sales increased by 130%! India's online clothing market is developing rapidly

In an interview report by Indian media on Indian clothing brand Arvind Fashion , the company's director Kulin Lalbhai said that Arvind Fashion 's online sales in 2020 reached 230% of that in 2019 ( an increase of 130% from 2019), more than doubling, and the online platform has become an important channel for the brand's revenue growth.

 

The growth of India's online clothing market benefited from the lockdown caused by the epidemic. In 2020, the epidemic lockdown prevented Indian people from going out shopping, so online shopping became popular in India. E-commerce platforms such as Flipkart, Amazon.in, and BigBasket experienced explosive growth in 2020.

 

Clothing, like electronic products, is one of the main categories of major e-commerce platforms in India. With the explosion of e-commerce platforms, the clothing category also ushered in explosive growth in 2020. During Diwali (online shopping carnival) alone, the sales of clothing brands Arvind Fashion in cooperation with Flipkart increased by 70%.

 

In addition to the growth of the online market, new changes have also emerged in the shopping choices of Indian people. Among them, sportswear and casual wear have become the two best-selling clothing categories. Among casual wear, T-shirts and Polo shirts are the most popular casual wear on e-commerce platforms.

 

Working and studying at home have made comfort the primary factor that consumers consider when purchasing clothing. Therefore, loose and convenient casual clothing has become people's first choice, while the growth of sportswear has benefited from people's increased demand for fitness.

 

The epidemic has made Indian people pay more attention to their health, so they have also stepped up their fitness exercises accordingly. Although they cannot go out due to the lockdown, they still use some simple and convenient sports equipment to exercise. Therefore, the demand for sportswear such as sports shoes, sportswear, sports shorts, wrist guards, knee pads, etc. has surged.

 

Overall, as a subtropical country, India has a perennial tropical monsoon climate with temperatures above zero all year round (in recent years, affected by global warming, temperatures in some areas drop below zero in winter). The high temperature lasts for 6 to 8 months (the weather starts to get hot in April and May), so there is a strong demand for loose and refreshing clothing.

 

Unlike China, in addition to simple modern clothing such as short-sleeved shirts, T-shirts, and POLO shirts, India's national costumes are also a form of daily wear, among which women's national costumes are more common, such as the saris and shawls we are familiar with, and sellers may also pay more attention to them.
