According to foreign media reports, last week CBS released data for the Netherlands throughout 2020. Online sales in the Netherlands in 2020 increased by 43% compared to 2019.
This is the strongest growth in Dutch e-commerce in many years , and Dutch e-commerce has entered a golden period of development in 2020.
Since the outbreak of the epidemic, Internet sales in the Netherlands have increased dramatically, and its online sales have increased sharply. Online sales in the second quarter of 2020 increased by 55% year-on-year compared with 2019, and in the third quarter increased by 38% year-on-year. The fourth quarter saw the strongest growth, with online revenue increasing by 55.6% year-on-year .
The survey investigated Dutch online stores and multi-channel retailers separately . The data showed that in the fourth quarter, the revenue of Dutch online stores increased by 44.5% , and the online revenue of multi-channel retailers increased by 71.5%. This growth broke the record in the second quarter of 2020. The online conversion rates in the Netherlands increased by 54.9% and 68.0% respectively compared with the same period last year , and the proportion and frequency of consumers' online shopping also gradually increased.
According to a report by the Dutch e-commerce industry, Thuiswinkel Markt Monitor, e-commerce sales in the Netherlands exceeded 2.58 billion euros in 2019 , with more than 96% of residents over the age of 15 shopping online .
Although online business in the Netherlands is currently growing strongly, the physical business is sluggish, which has a direct impact on the overall retail business in the Netherlands.
The biggest sales declines in the fourth quarter were seen in clothing stores , which fell 26.9% , and in shoe and leather goods stores, which fell -26.5%. Sales increased in DIY stores, kitchens, and flooring and furniture stores , but were lower than in the third quarter of 2020.
2020 was not just a disastrous year for the entire retail industry. Throughout 2020, Dutch retail sales increased by 5.9%, maintaining growth for seven consecutive years , and sales volume increased by 4% .
But the vast majority of these increases were driven by the growth of online retail business, and the physical business is still facing difficulties. Due to the blockade, retailers are pessimistic about the development of revenue and economic environment in the first quarter of 2021. However, from February 8, stores may open again , and the offline physical retail business in the Netherlands is gradually recovering. Netherlands Sales retail |
