The more they sold, the greater the loss. Recalls were frequent, and a number of big sellers suffered setbacks.
Govee recalls over 560,000 products, refunds may reach hundreds of millions
Earlier this month, Govee, a Chinese smart home product sold on Amazon and invested by Anker Innovations, was notified by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) to recall 560,000 products with the recall number 25-036 .
From September 2021 to September 2024, the products in question were sold through online channels such as Amazon, Govee's official US website, Govee Home App and TikTok Shop. A total of 561,100 units have been sold , including 512,500 units in the US market and approximately 48,600 units in the Canadian market . All of them are now being recalled.
Specifically, GoveeLife and Govee smart electric heaters are being recalled, mainly involving models H710 (including the H7130101 variant), H7131, H7132, H7133, 7134 and H7135 .
In terms of product design, each device has "GoveeLife" or "Govee" printed on the front or side. The heaters are available in black and white, and range in height from 9 inches to 26 inches.
The CPSC said that smart electric heaters may overheat and pose a risk of burns; in addition, tests showed that smart electric heaters did not comply with the voluntary industry safety standard UL 1278, posing a risk of overheating and fire, and the wireless control function also posed a risk.
And the facts show that as of the recall, GoveeLife and Govee had received 113 reports of overheating, including 7 reports of fire and 1 report of minor burns.
CPSC urges consumers to immediately stop using the recalled heaters and send photos of the damaged heaters, the manufacturer's label and the serial number on the bottom or side to GoveeLife or Govee at https://recall.goveelife.com/heater-recall.
Consumers without the original order number will receive a refund of $31 to $106.63, depending on the model purchased . Consumers with the original order number will receive a full refund.
Govee needs to refund the products, which were previously sold at prices between US$30 and US$150. That means it needs to bear a refund amount of US$16.83 million to US$84.16 million (equivalent to RMB 122 million to RMB 610 million) .
Fatal accident occurred, more than 220,000 products were recalled
In mid-November, Medical King, a major seller of nursing products , was recalled by the CPSC for 222,000 adult portable bed rails , with the recall number being 25-046 .
Medical King received a death report earlier , involving the 7007 model adjustable height bed auxiliary rail. It is reported that in November 2023, a 66-year-old man died after being trapped between the mattress and the bed rail involved .
The CPSC believes that the bed rails in question pose a risk of entrapment and suffocation. When the bed rails are connected to the bed, users may become trapped inside the bed rails or between the bed rails and the sides of the mattress , which creates a serious entrapment hazard and may even cause suffocation and death.
Therefore, CPSC announced the recall involving height-adjustable bed assist rails (Models 7007 and 7057) and bed assist rails without legs (Model 7037).
The height-adjustable bed assist rails are made of black or white metal tubing with round black foam rubber handles and a fabric bag. The legless bed assist rails are made of silver metal tubing with black foam rubber handles and a black fabric bag. There are no model or brand specific labels on the recalled bed rails.
Between January 2020 and March 2024, Medical King sold approximately 222,000 bedrails for approximately $40 across Amazon , Walmart , Target , eBay, Kohls and medicalkingusa.com .
Currently, CPSC is calling on consumers to stop using the product immediately and contact the brand for a free repair kit or replacement bed rails, depending on the model.
There have been many recalls of bed products, and the consequences are not light. In 2022, the Canadian home furnishing giant Bestar was recalled by the CPSC for 129,000 wall bed products .
It is reported that from September 2014 to 2022, Bestar received many reports about wall beds falling off the wall, but did not report them to the CPSC . Therefore, the CPSC imposed a fine of US$16.025 million on it .
Anker has also been affected many times, and such products are often recalled
In early November, the CPSC announced that Quad Lock, a popular outdoor product brand, would recall more than 15,000 products , with the recall number being 25-035.
It is understood that the recall involves the Quad Lock MAG power bank , which is equipped with a rechargeable lithium-ion battery and is black in color .
The CPSC said the battery pack in the power bank could overheat, posing a fire hazard. As of the time of the recall, Quad Lock had received 39 reports of incidents in the U.S., including 3 fires and 36 reports of smoke, melting, cracking or swelling, resulting in 2 property losses ; and 170 reports of incidents internationally , including 4 fires and 166 reports of smoke, melting, cracking or swelling, resulting in 1 property loss.
According to the notice, consumers should immediately stop using the products in question and contact Quad Lock for compensation measures such as refunds .
It is worth noting that CPSC advises that lithium-ion batteries in products should be handled in accordance with local regulations and follow the relevant procedures of municipal recycling centers. Do not throw them into trash cans or waste battery recycling bins at will .
From April 2023 to September 2024, approximately 13,700 units of the products in question were sold in the United States and approximately 1,580 units were sold in Canada through Amazon, brand independent sites, and multiple e-commerce platforms at a price of US $60 to US$80 .
In fact, the probability of recall of power bank products is particularly high. Even Anker, a brand under Anker, has had multiple products recalled.
In October, Anker's power bank products with models A1642 , A1647 , and A1652 were recalled with the recall number 25-011.
From January to July this year , the above products were sold on online platforms such as Amazon, AliExpress, Walmart, eBay, Best Buy , Target, and some offline stores, with about 2,100 pieces sold at a price of US$40 to US$60.
However, Anker had already recalled the above-mentioned models before the CPSC report. In September, the official website of the Hunan Provincial Market Supervision Administration also stated that Anker had reported the recall plan to the Hunan Provincial Market Supervision Administration in accordance with the requirements of the "Interim Provisions on the Management of Consumer Product Recalls". "From now on, Anker will recall 4,501 mobile power banks with models A1647/A1642/A1652 produced between December 2023 and April 2024."
In March, Anker's power coolers with detachable battery packs, such as models A17B0, A17A0, A17A1, and A17A2, were also notified of a recall by the CPSC . The recall number was 24-146 , and approximately 5,480 products were involved .
Earlier, in February last year , the Hunan Provincial Market Supervision Administration website announced that Anker recalled Anker manufactured between July 2022 and October 2022. 535 power bank (A1366), the number involved is 4,671 units.
In March of the same year , CPSC announced that the US distributor Fantasia Trading voluntarily recalled the above-mentioned power banks , involving approximately 48,200 units , with the recall number 23-147.
Battery-related products are recalled more frequently because they can easily cause fires, burns and other accidents.
In conclusion:
CPSC data shows that in fiscal year 2024, the organization issued a total of 333 recall reports, and as of today, a total of 38 recall reports have been issued in fiscal year 2025.
*Note: The U.S. government’s fiscal year runs from October 1 to September 30 of the following year .
It is also worth noting that many of the recalled products are made in China, which shows that overseas markets are more stringent on "Made in China". Therefore, sellers need to work harder on product quality, because once a product is recalled, the loss will be even greater. Refund loss |
