Post-00s work on Amazon, earning over 100,000 yuan a month

Free and easy, confident, rebellious, pursuing freedom, alternative ... The post-00s have many labels. When talking about the post-00s in the workplace, some people have a headache: "too jumpy, too difficult to manage, and can't hold on", while others appreciate: "imaginative, groundbreaking, and daring to act and take responsibility".

And Yien.com has also come into contact with sellers born after 2000 who have entered the cross-border e-commerce stage...

Post-00s cross-border business extends from the United States to Southeast Asia

"If it weren't for the epidemic, perhaps I wouldn't have been exposed to cross-border e-commerce so quickly, or I wouldn't have known about cross-border e-commerce at all," said Gloria . "It's not that I'm grateful for the epidemic, but that the epidemic changed the trajectory of my life."

In 2020, Gloria , a sophomore, was trapped at home due to an epidemic, and her studies shifted from the classroom to the computer screen.

“It’s too boring and depressing. I can only check my phone every day, from home to abroad, to see the excitement on the Internet all over the world.” This was the first opportunity for Gloria to enter the cross-border market.

Gloria has a puppy. Besides browsing her phone during class, dressing up her dog became one of her pastimes. She also often watched pet videos on overseas social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram, and posted videos of her own dog on these platforms. She accidentally received some attention. "Many messages asked me where I bought the dog's clothes and why I didn't see them on Amazon. That was the first time I knew about cross-border e-commerce platforms like Amazon."

Out of curiosity, Gloria browsed around Amazon and found that many pet clothing styles on the platform were average, but the prices were not cheap compared to those in China. She became interested in doing this business.

In the following months, Gloria learned about cross-border e-commerce trends and platform rules, as well as the prospects and market demand for the pet clothing products she was about to make.

In 2021, she officially started her cross-border e-commerce journey, registered a store on Amazon, and began to put products on the shelves.

" Orders were placed very quickly ," Gloria said, still very excited. "It was very unexpected. I received order notifications one after another, but I was still a little unsure because it was my first time. I was afraid of returns and fraud. I had a lot of worries, but I was also very happy."

According to Gloria , due to the small scale and the first time she was looking for a factory, she was quite cautious, so she asked the factory to send the goods to a friend's house, and then asked her friend to help send it to the warehouse. It was also because of this that Gloria found her first partner.

At the same time, she admitted that due to such a delivery process, the initial cost expenditure was relatively high and the profit margin was average . As she got deeper into the field of cross-border e-commerce, she became more and more bold. "Whether it is a cooperative factory or logistics, it is actually a gamble. There is no guarantee that the other party will always be trustworthy, but you have to give up this 'spirit of adventure'."

By the end of 2021, Gloria 's product profit margin had increased by 10%, and monthly sales and volume also increased month by month .

"Starting from 2022, the number of orders in our store began to show a more obvious growth, with sales reaching a new record every month, several times higher than in 2021." The number of orders has leapt, and sales have also increased. Most importantly, Gloria has become more and more adept at controlling costs, so the profits of its products continue to increase.

In the same year, Gloria graduated and began to devote herself to cross-border e-commerce. Her products also expanded from pet clothing to pet toys, pet supplies and other categories.

At the end of last year, Gloria was not satisfied with the US market and expanded into the Southeast Asian market through other third-party e-commerce platforms. " Orders are placed faster in Southeast Asia, but the profits here are lower than in the US market, so we are taking the path of 'small profits but quick turnover' . "

Up to now, Gloria revealed that, excluding big sales and peak seasons, her monthly profit on Amazon is more than 100,000 , and the GMV of the store during big sales will be more than 10 times higher than usual .

Post-00s overseas students make an average of 30,000 yuan a month in cross-border business

Unlike Gloria, Reed studied abroad and did cross-border work.

In 2022, Reed, who just turned 20, began his exchange student career. "After going abroad, the financial pressure was a bit high, so I wanted to make money like crazy, but the various procedures required for working were too many and too troublesome, and I didn't have the courage to work illegally."

When he was at a loss, a Chinese student from the same school as Reed invited him to work on cross-border business together. "At that time, I knew nothing about cross-border business. I just worked as a helper and earned a little salary while studying."

In less than three months, Reed had a general understanding of the basic processes of cross-border e-commerce, so he registered an Amazon store. Regarding categories, Reed did not focus on a particular product. In layman's terms, he was distributing goods.

"In the early stage, I would pay attention to what products people in the study abroad group would pay more attention to, because I thought I should start with the Chinese business at the beginning." However, in terms of style, Reed found that Chinese-style products have been gaining more and more attention overseas in recent years, so no matter what product it is, he will habitually add some Chinese elements.

After that, Reed contacted the domestic factory of the corresponding product through his family to make product samples and put them on the shelves.

However, Reed said that placing orders was not particularly smooth at the beginning, and it took about two or three months before there was a slight improvement .

"The first significant increase in order volume was during the Christmas peak season in 2022." After that, Reed began to summarize which products have stronger seasonality and which products have little difference between the peak season and daily life. Based on this, he had a rough estimate of the inventory.

During Amazon’s PD last year, Reed ’s store hit its first peak in terms of orders and sales. That month’s profit increased sevenfold!

This year , PD Reed's store hit a new high. "On a daily basis, my monthly profit averages about 30,000 RMB , which can be several times higher during big sales. November and December of each year are another small climax following July."

At present, while Reed is busy with his studies, he has been actively preparing for the peak season in Europe and the United States. As for whether to work full-time in cross-border business after graduating with a master's degree, or to take it as a side job, he said he has not yet decided.

Whether it is Gloria or Reed , these post-00s have already achieved some good results in cross-border business. Amid the voices of “Amazon is getting harder and harder, cross-border business is getting harder and harder”, there are still people flocking to this sea area.

Helium 10 data shows that by the end of 2024, Amazon is expected to have 9.7 million sellers, of which 1.9 million are active sellers . Currently, sales from third-party sellers account for 60% of Amazon's total sales.

As of the time of the Helium 10 report, 839,900 new sellers have joined Amazon this year , with about 3,700 new sellers added every day. By the end of this year, the total number of new sellers is expected to surge to 1.3505 million .

Among them, there are about 1.1 million active Amazon sellers in the United States, and nearly 80% of Americans have purchased goods on Amazon ; in the UK, the number exceeds 280,000 , and Amazon's sales account for 20% of UK online consumption ...

Regardless of the market or platform, the potential of cross-border e-commerce is still attracting new players. Goldman Sachs reported that global e-commerce sales are expected to grow to $3.9 trillion this year and reach $5 trillion by 2028.
