2,900 items are all off the shelves! Sellers were investigated for selling illegal products

Electrical appliance safety has always been a key concern for both platforms and consumers when purchasing. Recently, the Consumer Product Safety Office (CPSO) of Singapore stated that from January to November this year, more than 2,900 illegal household products were found on various e-commerce platforms.

If the household appliances sold are of a regulated type, they must be registered with the CPSO to obtain a unique safety mark number. Sellers will then receive a valid seal to be printed on the products they sell.

Most of the household products announced this time are controlled goods. They do not meet regulatory requirements because they are not registered with the CPSO or do not have valid safety marks.

The top five categories of unregistered home appliances sold online that do not meet regulatory requirements include AC adapters, portable sockets, cookers such as toasters, grills and electric stoves. The rest include hair dryers, kettles, hot water dispensers, etc.

Most of these products are sold on e-commerce platforms such as Amazon, Carousell, Ezbuy, Lazada, Qoo10 and Shopee .

According to the CPSO, most of the above products were caused by consumer complaints or were discovered during market supervision. At present, all the related products have been removed from the shelves. Sellers who sold the related unregistered products have also been fined or warned.

According to information, there are 33 types of household appliances in Singapore that are considered regulated goods. They must be tested according to safety standards and affixed with safety marks before they can be sold in Singapore. The categories of regulated goods updated in July are as follows:

CPSO reminds relevant sellers that sellers who offer unregistered controlled goods for sale may face a maximum jail term of two years or a fine of up to S$10,000, or both, upon conviction.

CPS O director Beatrice Wong said that if consumers purchase non-compliant and unregistered household appliances, it is easy to cause safety accidents such as fire and electrical hazards.

As for electrical safety, once a problem is discovered, the consequences are disastrous. Therefore, sellers must pay attention to local laws and regulations on the sale of related electrical products and strictly follow them. Avoid the risk of products being removed from shelves due to violations or facing other more severe penalties.
