Recently, Pattern released the results of a survey of 1,000 adult Australian consumers who have made online purchases in the past 12 months. The survey mainly revealed Australian consumers' views on seven well-known e-commerce platforms such as Amazon, eBay, and Temu.
As the cost of living pressures increase, more and more Australian consumers are turning to e-commerce platforms to research, compare and purchase prices and products. It is reported that in 2023, the vast majority of Australian consumers will have shopping experience on e-commerce platforms, and 94% of them plan to continue shopping from Amazon, Catch , eBay and other platforms in the next year .
The survey results show that although Temu has become increasingly popular in Australia as an emerging e-commerce platform, consumers still have a relatively negative view of the products it sells.
Especially in terms of trust in product quality, Temu ranked the lowest, with only 7% of consumers expressing trust in the products sold on this platform. Amazon, which has established a relatively transparent product rating and review system, has become the most trusted e-commerce platform in Australia, with a trust rate of 58%, followed by Catch (25%), Kogan (19%) and MyDeal (11%).
In terms of product variety, more than 60% of shoppers believe that Amazon has the richest product variety, followed by eBay at 52 % and Temu at 17%.
Pattern Australia general manager Merline McGregor said that although Temu has made its mark in the Australian e-commerce sector and attracted a large number of young shoppers, it still needs to work hard to win more favor from Australian consumers because Asian consumers do not rate it highly in terms of product quality, returns and convenience.
McGrego also mentioned that with household budgets tight, e-commerce channels are attracting more and more Australian shoppers with their easy-to-use price comparison functions and sales events; as the globally renowned Prime Day event becomes increasingly popular locally, Amazon has successfully attracted 48% of shoppers, followed by eBay (41%) and Catch (27%).
As an established platform, Amazon performs significantly better than other platforms in terms of shopping convenience. 56% of consumers emphasize that Amazon is the most convenient shopping platform, while eBay (46%) and Catch (23%) are the lowest .
The data also shows that e-commerce platforms will also be more popular with high-income shoppers this year. It is reported that more than 80% of households with an income of $200,000 shop on Amazon. Of course, newer platforms like SHEIN are also attracting high-income consumers; in the past 12 months, 34% of people in the $160,000-190,000 household income class shopped on the platform.
