According to foreign media reports, local RCMP in Burnaby said an Amazon driver was suspected of embezzling the parcels he was responsible for and listing them for sale online. The theft charge is currently under trial.
An Amazon spokesperson said the company notified Burnaby RCMP in September about a driver who was allegedly selling items on Facebook that were supposed to be delivered to consumers' homes.
According to the spokesperson, Amazon has monitored a total of 32 reports from customers claiming that they did not receive deliveries, even though the drivers had marked them as "delivery completed."
Police said several of the missing items were found for sale online and the suspect was identified as a 28-year-old Vancouver resident. Police then executed a search warrant, found "a large amount of stolen property," and arrested the suspect.
Police were unable to provide further details about the individual, but explained that approximately 32 items were stolen and sold with an estimated total value of $2,200. RCMP said the man will likely be charged with theft under $5,000.
Local media reported that police had been trying to return the package to its rightful owner.
"We are able to successfully find the owners of many packages and deliver the packages to their homes so that they can have a more perfect holiday season," said a sheriff.
Although the suspect is in Vancouver, the case was investigated by Burnaby RCMP because the complaint came from the Burnaby area.
With the holidays approaching, police are advising people — especially those whose packages don't fit in their apartment mailboxes — to check their mailboxes twice a day to make sure packages aren't being stolen. Amazon driver theft |
