Amazon lost nearly 8 million users in a few months. Did they all go to Temu next door?

Recently, a research institute's survey results seem to confirm this conjecture. According to the survey results released by the statistics agency GWS, Amazon's UK mobile users have lost more than 1 million this year.

At the beginning of this year, about 9.3 million consumers used Amazon's app every day, but now that number has dropped to less than 8.3 million.

In addition to Amazon, eBay is also facing the same problem. Since the beginning of this year, eBay has lost nearly 2 million daily active users in the UK: from nearly 6 million at the beginning of the year to about 4.2 million now.

On the other hand, Temu and Shein are gaining popularity like crazy. Temu was officially launched in the UK in April this year, but in the following month its daily active users soared to 3.5 million, but Temu's growth trend has since slowed down.

For Shein, which wants to transform itself into a platform , the performance in the first half of this year is also very impressive. In the first six months of this year, Shein's daily active users in the UK increased by nearly one-fold, from 1 million to 2 million.

In addition to these two, there is another little-known platform that is also expanding its sphere of influence. Data shows that the e-commerce platform Vinted currently has about 2 million daily active users, and is still growing. What is a bit surprising is that the time users spend on it every day is almost the same as Temu.

In terms of user usage time, Temu undoubtedly has a clear lead. The average British person spends 18 minutes a day on Temu and 14 minutes on Vinted. Amazon, eBay and other platforms only get 8 minutes of user time a day.

However, data shows that Temu’s current user base is mainly female, with 66% of them being female and only 34% being male. From the perspective of the healthy development of the platform, attracting only a single user group is obviously not good for future growth.

In fact, it is not just in the UK, a similar plot is also being played out in the U.S. Since April 2023, the number of Amazon users has begun to decline sharply, from 54 million daily active users to 46 million, and nearly 8 million users have been lost in a few months.

Temu ’s daily active users in the United States are increasing, with nearly 10 million new daily active users since the beginning of this year. Currently, its user base is even comparable to Walmart, with 17 million daily active users.

The CEO of GWS said that for many years, Amazon's position in the e-commerce field has been unshakable, but the situation may be different now. From the current situation, maintaining user loyalty has become a common goal of Amazon and Temu.
