£2.2 billion spent a year! Home furnishings are still a high-demand product

As we all know, home furnishing products have always been popular in the European and American markets . For the British who are extremely pursuing home comfort, annual home furnishing consumption is a considerable but very necessary expense in their bills.

25% of Brits say keeping up with home furnishing trends is important to them, with nearly 70 million out-of-date home items thrown out every year, according to new research from Hammonds Furniture.

About 9% of respondents said they frequently replace furniture, cushions, lamps, etc. for reasons such as fashion trends and hygiene issues. According to the survey, a total of 69.9 million household items are discarded each year . The study also shows that although Generation Z (18-24 years old) claims to pay attention to environmental protection and sustainable development, in fact this group updates their homes more frequently than other age groups.

Around £2.2 billion worth of household items is sent to landfill in the UK every year .

The survey pointed out that in fact, British people only buy larger household items every few years, such as home mirrors ( 51%) and carpets (49%). However, the majority of British people said that they would buy smaller and lower-cost household items at least once a year , including 39% of respondents who buy cushions once a year and 38% of respondents who buy new bed sheets every year.

25% of respondents said it was important for them to keep up with homeware trends, and another 25% frequently buy trendy homewares they see on social media.

Younger generations are more invested in keeping up with new trends, with 36% of Gen Z saying they have to keep up with home trends , and another 44% saying they regularly buy trendy home decor after seeing it online.

When it comes to buying homewares, 66% of Brits rank finding high-quality, durable items as their top priority. Whether an item matches their current decor ( 56% ) and cost ( 48% ) are also key factors consumers consider when shopping.

Almost half ( 45% ) of Brits would like to invest in more environmentally friendly and sustainable homewares, but are unable to afford them due to their higher prices . However, three quarters ( 75% ) admit they do not research a brand’s sustainability before buying .

According to the 2019 State of the Textile Market report released by WRAP, about 900,000 tons of textile waste is sent to landfill or incinerated in the UK every year , of which household textiles account for more than 40% .

There is no need to explain the huge scale of the UK home furnishing market. A survey once showed that 36% of British people said that they spent more time shopping for home furnishings than socializing , and 49% of respondents said they would rather spend their money on home furnishings.

According to research by One Poll, young people in the UK spend an average of one and a half hours a week browsing home furnishing websites , and 42% of British millennials spend more than one and a half hours browsing home furnishing categories on e-commerce platforms.

In the just-concluded Prime Day, household goods became the most popular category on Amazon UK. Previously, this category has also been on Amazon's hot search and best-selling lists many times.

However, as inflation continues in the UK and consumers are more concerned about necessities such as food, gasoline and energy, many UK home retailers have reported a sharp drop in orders, especially for large furniture .

The e-commerce winter is spreading around the world, and the explosive growth in the past two years has been quiet this year. Although the financial crisis has affected consumer desire, consumer habits will not change suddenly, and the home furnishing category in the UK still has sales potential that cannot be ignored.
