As the expiration date of the contract between UPS and the Teamsters approaches, negotiations between the two parties on a new contract have reached a deadlock.
On July 5, US time , the Teamsters union and UPS both publicly accused each other of abandoning the labor-management negotiations aimed at avoiding the largest strike in the United States since the 1950s.
The Teamsters union believes that UPS's proposal is "unacceptable" and "does not meet the needs of employees." Union President Sean O'Brien said in a statement that UPS must make a choice, "but they clearly chose the wrong path."
UPS denied terminating the negotiations . Malcolm Berkle, a company spokesman, said that the company had offered a generous agreement, but the union still stopped the negotiations . "We did not leave (the negotiation table), and the union also has the responsibility to continue the negotiations." Refusing to negotiate, especially when the negotiations are near the end (with results), will cause great anxiety to employees and customers, and may disrupt the US economy. Just last week, the Teamsters gave UPS a deadline of June 30 to come up with a "last, best and final" deal. The contract expires at the end of this month (July 31), and the union is demanding a new final wage contract before then to prevent a strike.
The Teamsters have been trying to get UPS workers higher wages and more full-time positions, and to provide the same pay to employees regardless of their tenure, which the union believes UPS is able to meet. In addition, the union also wants to remove surveillance cameras from delivery trucks.
UPS said the devices were "sensors" rather than cameras, and that they were installed for the safety of drivers. UPS also insisted that the new conditions they offered were "historic" and that the drivers' salaries were the highest in the industry.
Although the negotiations have not made any progress, the transportation and delivery of packages have not been greatly affected. Experts said that as the contract date approaches, the number of shippers turning to other express delivery companies will increase significantly .
But how much other companies in the market can take over is still unknown. According to data provided by Pitney Bowes, UPS accounted for 24% of the US parcel market last year .
It is reported that the last UPS workers' strike was in 1997, which lasted for 15 days and caused the company to lose $850 million. According to foreign media, if this strike really happens, it will not only be the largest strike in the United States since 1959, but will also threaten the delivery of millions of packages every day. ups logistics |
